I just ordered a Tascam DP-008EX for myself.

I've started writing again, and I wanted a scratchpad-type recorder with overdub capabilities and didn't want to spend an arm and a leg to get it. This looks like the perfect tool for my needs.

Looking forward to doing some home-recording...and more writing!

Well, my "dead" Portastudio arrived this week. (;^D)

Got my Tascam DP-008EX and figured out the basics pretty quickly. Looking forward to spending some time this weekend getting to know it better and maybe laying down some scratch tracks for some things I've been working on.

Initial thoughts - this thing is small!
I like that, actually. Very portable, so I can get some "on-site" recordings of band rehearsals, gigs, and some house jams. Exactly what I wanted.

Menus aren't too bad to work through - I'll know more about that after this weekend. Seems fairly straightforward, though.

Yes, it's more than a bit "old school" but so am I, so I'm comfortable with it. And at $150, I'm thinking the bang-for-buck will be excellent for my needs.

I really like using standalone's for recording the raw tracks and dumping to the computer for mixing. I have a Fostex X-16 and a Tascam something 24. The Fostex is 16 track, 16 bit and the Tascam is 24 tracks at 24 bit. I can record the whole band on each one everyone with a track or two and there is plenty of room for overdubs.

I can see tracking on a portastudio, especially if there are multiple tracks going down simultaneously. Then dumping to a DAW for mixing/mastering.

For my recording methods (constructing drums, add bass, guitars, keys, vocals) I don't every see going back to stand alone.

I have up to 28 tracks (chained interfaces, 16 in one) at a time available on the PC in, 6 out.

I couldn't justify a standalone when I'd end up in a DAW anyway - even when I was sick as a dog and in bed for a month, I recorded to a 2-channel USB device on the laptop.

How about this one? I recorded piano, banjoke and vocals at home on the trusty Korg standalone; my partner Ed Woltil added guitar and keyboards at his house in Logic; Chuck Darling's drums were added along with elastic-y bass parts(courtesy of the amazing Andy Irvine) at a friend's home studio with Pro Tools; electric and slide guitars were added over in Swindon UK (using whatever the hell Dave Gregory uses) and tracks were duly mixed in Pro Tools at the aforementioned friend's home studio. Phew!
Quite happy with this one, all in all, even if it does sound like a campaign song for (against) Donald Trump...

Played Elastic Man and another from your previous link for my wife. Consider us fans, Steve. You hit all our musical comfort zones and the writing is top notch. Bravo!

Aw, thanks for that littleluch; that's much appreciated. Beatliscious? I'll take that!!
I certainly think Dave Gregory's slide guitar adds a little George flavour to the whole affair.
Thanks again, mate,
Cheers,
