Did Fender discontinue the Classic Series '65 Mustang? Music123 is blowing out the cases on the bay and most large stores look like they are out.

Looks like it for now, sure they'll be back if demand is present (since they're a staple of the Japanese market).

That said, my Squier VM Mustang is a better guitar by a mile than my '69RI (Japan domestic market, revolt yellow).

They're both fine instruments but the Squier has "it" and the MIJ doesn't (and I played '64s and '65s for years before they got expensive).

At 3x the price, the MIJ didn't make much sense, and the Mexico plant is tooled up to make Mustangs now after doing the Cobain model I suspect.

I was under the impression that the KC mustangs were also MIJ. At least the one I used to have was. Never bonded with the TOM bridge myself and had a couple 65's in the past. I liked the single coil tone better but that's just me. Are the Squier VM's shielded? I was led to believe the MIJ were shielded with the copper plates and that was one reason why they were at a higher price. Then again my info could be wrong.

The KC Jaguars et al are all MIM now, so are the PS Mustangs, etc.

I haven't taken the Squier apart (no need thusfar), the VM Jaguar had shielding paint in the cavity and foil on the PG though.

The '69RI here is *NOT* shielded (but it's a domestic Japan model, not a US).

Squier has single coils, I was merely mentioning reasons why I'd wager that the MIJs day is done in Mustangland for now.

For the price, they're outrageously expensive for what has always been a budget guitar (but I have not bought into the myth of the Japanese Fenders in modern times, as I have never played one that just jumped out at me as a grand, buy me now at MIA prices, instrument).

Realistically though, it's the same reason the Pawn Shop stuff was (mostly/all/many) moved to Mexico - Japanese production is just too damn expensive versus what Fender can sell it for here.

I hear ya on that. Thanks for the reply. These pages can be kind of slow to get a reply sometimes.
