I tried one out in black and it is very cool. The open face Filtertron sounded very much like my MIJ G6120. I believe they are ceramic magnet Filtertrons on the Electromatic series.

The only issue on the one I tried was a rattling bridge but I'm sure that could easily be fixed. A heck of a guitar for the money though. Super nice finish and the Bigsby worked well.

Got that Gretsch itch recently too. Sandy Claws said I could so...I did.

Like the one I tried. Nice guitar.

Sorry. I just realized the one I tried was the single cutaway. I would love to try that DC model though. The body is a little thinner too.

A few BIG notes!

I got my 5420 yesterday. It has the Gretsch sound to be sure. All those wonderful overtones sound almost like multiple guitars at once. It is also huge! It is beautifully crafted and plays great. The fit & finish are exceptional. The individual volume pots are worthless, more like on-off switches. The master volume does work like a normal pot, so I can compensate with that. Too bad, that to replace the pots that don't work with decent ones would likley void my "limited lifetime warranty".
The Blacktop Filtertrons are great. They chime clean & roar with Marshally OD & everything in between.
The Aspen Green is gorgeous, a pale grey-green. The binding & all is perfect. The Bigsby is OK. I'll lube the saddles & nut as a matter of course. Maybe a Compton bridge down the road.
I got it through Music Store Live- call & get their best price. I recommend them highly after this deal.
Except for the cheesy pots this is a real-deal Gretsch!

Edit to add a few things. I did a lot of research today and the volume pot peculiarities are common on Gretschs, even on some of the Pro Line models. It may have more to do with the circuit than with the actual pots themselves. That oddity may be something I just have to learn to work with.

On another note, the complex overtones of the 5420 make for a WONDERFUL SLIDE guitar, kind of like playing an electrified resonator. It is just really easy & pleasant to play slide on, nothing to fight at all to get a killer slide tone. Gretschs are not common guitars for slide but they should be!

Give me a second to think of something..

I bought a G5422TDCG that had been pin striped by "Hot Rod Walt" two or three months ago. Great guitar for the money - and plays and sounds fantastic. I have a lot of guitars, most of which cost a lot more and this one is (and will continue to) getting it's share of gig time for sure.

I'm tempted to get one of the limited run of lefty G5622Ts from Jerry's Lefty Guitars. The run is being offered in two finishes, blue with white competition stripes or white with blue stripes. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
