too many guitars and not enough hands
Oct 11th, 2014 03:26 AM   Edit   Profile   Print Topic   Search Topic

Here we go, I've only spent limited time with the guitar maybe an hour tops.

First up the build quality & the finish is flawless this is an extremely well made guitar for a Chinese guitar.

The body resonates acoustically,

Action wise the guitar store set it up for me and they pretty much got the action and intonation spot on, I'm sure I'll tweak it when I change strings and it settles in .

The neck has a nice c shape not to thick, plays great from first to 15th ( don't go past the 15th much) nut seems to be cut well

the tuners seem pretty smooth and hold tuning well.

Now the pups sweetly voiced with a bit of overdrive nice growl of p90's shine through I like the grittiness of the bridge while the neck has a nice round warm tone. I reckon I could get sustain for days, of course controlling it is another story.

Clean it looses some clarity and focus but I've been playing it through my Ibanez TS amp which is not the cleanest of amps

Will try my DRRI when I get it back from the rehearsal room.

Now the big lefty question are the pots wired correctly ?

The volume pots are they've got full volume sweep which is great.

But the tone pots arghhhhhh. they are either on or off, I'm going to have to get this sorted to really put the pups through its paces.

Other than that I'm so far happy with it.

Build fit and finish 8 out of 10

Pups and controls 6 out of 10

Overall 6.5 / 7 out of 10

will take a pic of it tomorrow hopefully and post it up

Very cool! Chinese (and other non-Japanese far east) -made guitars are pretty scary-good these days.

The tone pots may be linear taper and not audio/log taper. This is sometimes an issue with some pickups--a linear taper makes the pot act more like a switch than a variable resistor.

Look in there through an F hole with a little inspection mirror and a handheld light to see what they used. Oftentimes you can see the "A" (audio/log) or "B" (linear) after the pot's rating (e.g., A250K, B300K, etc.) marked on the case.

Just a heads up, lefties - there are two used Casino's listed at MF right now, both available for $503.20.

That's such a good price, I'm tempted to cancel my local order and get one of those...

...just didn't want anyone here to miss out on a good deal.

Take your - um - pick

I recently bought a "gently used" Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top Pro from MF. There was not a mark on it. The only way I could tell it wasn't new was there was no warranty card!

MF now has three used left handed Casinos. I wonder why so many are being returned?

i'm still liking mine played it through my DRRI at some volume last week and it was great even the drummer was impressed with the tone the P90's really growled and glistened when the volume is rolled back.

Controlling the feedback takes a little bit to get used too. admittedly we jammed in a confined space.

I saw that - and wondered the same thing. And then wondered if I would want to take a chance on a returned one.

I suspect part of it may be expectation level. If you read glowing reviews, and the instrument you get is good but not great, you might be disappointed.

I also suspect that P-90's aren't everyone's cup of tea - but you don't know until you try 'em through your rig on in your real world situation.

In addition to the P-90's not being to everybody's taste, the hollow body sound isn't either. One reviewer at another forum didn't like the "spongy" sound and felt the guitar was average at best. Think of all the great bands of the 1970's and I don't know of one well-known guitarist that played a Casino or ES-330.

Yeah, after John Lennon played one during (and after) the Beatle years, everyone realized they sounded like crap...
