FDP Forum / Guild/DeArmond/Tacoma Guitars / Dearmond Starfire and Dearmond Starfire Custom, what's the difference?

May 8th, 2014 04:49 PM   Edit   Profile

Hello everyone, my first time posting here :). My question is pretty much the topic title. I can't seem to find a lot of information on the interwebz when it comes to the difference between the Starfire and the Starfire Custom. And as far as I can see they look the same apart from the trussrod cover (and sometimes the A in DeArmond looks different, not sure if that has anything to do with it)

Thank you

Tom B.

Not that there wasn't one, but I don't recall a "Custom." There was a "Special" - cutaway, single coils and vibrato.

There were two Starfires in the DeArmond lineup, the single cutaway Starfire Special and the double cut Starfire (sometimes referred to as the Starfire Custom).

There were some subtle changes to the truss rod covers, headstock inlay style, pickguard shapes, and tuner styles during the three year run of these models.

Also, some of the earliest versions have "Guild" references on truss rod covers and on the back of the headstock. These "Guild" markings were deleted on later versions.

My light is on if you have any other questions. I am pretty familiar with the line, having owned ten different models over the years.

Thank you, the difference between the non-special and the special was clear to me, but the non-custom and the custom seem to be about the exact same guitar.
I recently bought a Crimson Red Dearmond Starfire (non-custom, non-special), I think from 1998, and it has the Guild markings (on the trussrod cover a logo, and on the back just the 'by Guild'). The custom ones seem to have 'Starfire Custom' on the trussrod cover, while mine says 'Starfire'. Great guitar, but they are getting pretty expensive.
