Musical accident waiting to happen
May 7th, 2014 12:41 PM   Edit   Profile   Print Topic   Search Topic

I answered an ad by a guy, ostensibly a pro back in the day, wanting to start a basement band with good quality, geezer players, but no pretenses to gigging. Great, and right up my alley.

There was a list of five songs to prep for meeting #1. In cases like this, even though organizer dude professed to wanting to play the leads (fine with me; I can say anything I need to say from the backline), I always come prepped to play any part in all the songs, dumbed down to fit within my limitations, if necessary.

Leave aside the other skill issues (several people couldn't even find the "one," which is a bit of a showstopper), wouldn't you think at least the guy who called the songs should be able to get through one of them from end to end?

At every FDP jam I've ever been to, which is quite a few, people always come prepped, especially the guy who called the tune. Everybody can get through the songs, at whatever their level of expertise. I mean, that's kind of the minimum you need to bring in order to have a fighting chance of having actual fun, eh?

That's 6 bucks of gas I don't guess I'll be wasting again. Disappointing, because it sounded good on paper.

first fdp jam at jumbo jimmy's for me back in 05 has led to countless fun moments onstage and lots of knowledge about gear. Prearranged song lists helps everybody prepare and sound their best too

sj, I've played at several jams with you; you take it seriously and still have a lot of fun. You show up ready to play.

There are a lot of guitar players. Guitars and guitar owners are everywhere. Maybe one in ten, however, can actually sit and play through an entire tune without getting lost or derailing the music train.

Ya gets out of it what ya puts into it. SteveCarlo makes a good point.

Not as bad as you hate it when the guy who's calling the shots shows up unable to play the songs he assigned as homework (especially if he represents himself as an ex-full-time musician).

Maybe I oughtta file this under Craigslist scams. At least I didn't get mugged, like the wife thought I would.

Of course she also thought I was going to get mugged by Dr. Brad P. and Leftymeister, so she's not a good yardstick.

I *hate* blues jams/open mics for some of the reasons you mention.

However I love all the FDP jams. Guys like you make it fun for me.

"I answered an ad by a guy,"

I tried to put a geezer, garage band together back when I first got into guitar, (2006, maybe) and it went pretty much the same way.

I was the ringleader, so to speak, offering little more than the venue (a huge basement which cost me a pretty penny to prepare) and counted on some halfway knowledgable folks to show up, purely for fun.

I was perfectly clear about intentions, talent level, seriousness of purpose, in the ad, and got a pretty good response, with a wide range of abilities.

They also brought a wide range of attitudes and expectations. It appeared none had actually read, the ad, or if they did, didn't understand it.

The head cutting and backstabbing started the second week in. The whole thing lasted about a month.

Funny thing is, some respondents warned me (from their experiences) that something like this might happen. Herding cats, and all.

They were right.

When the Devil

Peter, I think FDP jams are a bit different than a regular band thing, or even a "garage/basement" band. At a jam, nobody has anything invested in the project. Only once in a great while are there any diva incidents. They're rare, but they do sometimes occur.

In a band or recurring-musical-team-sorta-situation, the individuals feel they have a bit more at stake and there tends so be some pack behavior. The peckers in the bunch try to establish a pecking order. It can get un-fun pretty quick.

I have yet to come away from an FDP jam, muttering to myself, "That SUCKED!"

Well, there's always the Atlanta jam coming up, so anything's possible.

Same here, and I've been to a LOT of FDP jams! Some have been more memorable than others, but they have ALL been fun!

I don't know if anyone has been more spoiled by FDP jams than me. I've played at several up and down the east coast and always am amazed at the friendly vibe of this crowd.

Doing ClamFests here in NJ since 06 has turned into a real labor of love. Just seeing how so many players step up to help with gear, internet help, emceeing and setting up/breaking down the stage really puts this jam in a special place.

Playing with all of you is the best part of the day. Hearing the talent the stage gets packed with knocks me out

The disappointing thing is this situation never got close to that point, and my feel is that wouldn't have been a problem. It couldn't get past "the dog ate my homework" stage.
