I am looking for a keyboard to be played by my 16 yr old grandson. He is currently in his high school jazz band.

H4e is a violist and a guitarist.

He now shows interest in keyboard.

I am looking for something that is of decent quality,. weighted keys..possibly around $500.

Must have ability to sound like a piano and.. a Hammond B-3.. anything else optional.

Any recommendations ?

When I was looking for a digital piano keyboard a few years back, I went went with a Yamaha P-120. While they don't make my model any longer, I'm really impressed with how good the keys feel (similar enough to their acoustic pianos to not find significant differences for players of my caliber). The organ sounds are good and the electronic piano sounds, including a Rhodes sample, are excellent.

Lots of choices but for me, it's all about keyboard feel and Yamahas are very good.

Thanks Chris..

Is there a Hammofd B-3 sound in there somewhere.

This because I will assume he is going to set it aside and go strictly guitar and I'll end up with the keyboard.

I want the keyboard to sound like a piano and a Hammond.

personally I don't like fully weighted keys- they are tiring and for someone just starting out it can be a buzz kill

If you start out with semi weighted and velocity sensitive keys you will probably keep interest longer while removing the cheesy casio feel

I have a roland fantom x6 so its only 61 keys but I don't need more and the space savings is a big plus. I can also layer sounds and mix them on the keyboard to create my own patches. For instance I have a piano with a glockenspiel in the mix as well as a touch of vibes which I use for Born to Run.

I created a better piano patch and some great horn sections by adding specific brass pieces then mixing them to the sound I want

You can get some great deals out there used for some good keyboards.

jefe, the Yamaha does a decent jazz organ sound but only when run through an amp. The onboard speakers don't have enough ooomph for that although I've used that sound in an acoustic jazz combo in the past (but I favor the electric piano settings which the Yamaha excels at IMO.

If you can find a used P-120 that would be a really good choice.
