Billy Joel raves about Elton John's playing. I'm not a huge fan of Elton and I consider him a pop act rather than rock, but I get where Billy's coming from. You can't have this discussion without mentioning Billy Powell of Lynyrd Skynyrd and mabe even Greg Hawkes of The Cars.
And I'm big fan of Seth Justman of the J.Geils Band.

It always struck me that Elton John's approach to piano was/is very rhythm guitar-like.

+1 on Tony Banks. His solos with Genesis on the "Selling England" LP were just stunning.

WOW! How could I forget Tony Banks. He's probably my absolute favorite keyboard player. Then there's Keith Emerson.

Benmont Tench is the "Mike Campbell" of the rock keyboard world. Extremely talented and many times overlooked.
He's extremely versatile and always plays for the song, yet take him out of the equation and it's clear his impact is huge on Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers sound.
