I bought a CA Red '62 RI body in Nitro & a '65 pickguard assembly ready to drop in & wire up. I won't have any problems w/ the fit will I? Now I'll have to scrape up the $$$$ for a neck, tuners, Vibrato assembly & bridge. Not sure if I will need anything else.

Any advice on a vintage specked neck w/ 7.25 radius. At least that is what I think I want instead of the 9.5 radius. I'll need a bridge assembly & I understand that the original bridge is not the way to go. Please chime in & give me some ideas of what I should look for & purchase. I have a very shallow pocket. I want to come out w/ a very nice guitar but need to go easy on the money if I can.

I plan on setting her up w/ some heavy flatwounds but not sure whether to use 11s or 12s.

Please talk to me & give me some advice on putting this baby together.

Peace,
Jake

There should be no differences in the physical fit of the two pickguards as long as they are both US made guitars. The MIJ & squire Jags are slightly different.

You are a bit bound by scale length so a Jag spec neck will be necessary. USACG may have something aftermarket. Mustang necks also fit.

Setting up a Fender offset requires a bit of experience to get it right. The neck most likely will need to be shimmed for more break angle over the bridge. There is nothing wrong with the stock Fender offset bridge if you shim and use a bit of loctite in/on all the adjustment screws to keep it where you set it.

I use flat 12s on my Jag. Surf is king with this set up.

Are you going for a surfy sound or alt rock? That might change your choice of strings.

Thanks, Hammond. I do plan on putting some Flatwound 12s. I bought a body & full pg assembly w/ pups, wiring & all the controls on Ebay. Originally it was a '62 body but I changed my mind & got the '65 instead. Still CA Red. Body comes w/ Tremolo plate, arm, neck plate, bridge & has the foam inserts in pup cavities. Also looks like it has some internal wiring in the routing. Not sure what other little items I may need. I may change the bridge to a Mustang type. Then I'll need a good neck.

Peace,
Jake

If you're going with a neck with a different radius than the bridge the body came with (no idea on what the specs are on the MIA stuff, if I wanted to spend 4 figures I'd buy a refined vintage instrument), you'll need a new bridge that matches most likely.

I say most likely because sometimes you can get away with it, sometimes you can't.

Decide on neck first and go from there.

I'd look at 24" scale vintage Duo-sonic or Mustang necks if I was going 7.25" personally versus buying a "new" one since there are no reasonable options out there.

I remember in the mid-late '90s Fender was selling Teles, Strat bodies & also necks. Then they quit. I was on the Fender site 2 days ago & they are back to selling many variations of the Strat, Tele bodies + also necks. Leftys & rightys. I also think but not sure I saw a bass body & neck. All frigging kinds of things & necks had the decals applied & finished. Not a Jag neck to be found. I sent off an email & got a reply that at this time they had no plans to offer a Jag neck but things could change. Well, that does not help me right now. I have a '66 DuoSonic II w/ the short scale neck. Have not played it in years but it sounded really great last time I played her. When I purchased her for $100 in early '80s someone had stripped the body & put some shellac on it. One day I plan to sand it down & try to do a refinish back to an original color, either Red or Blue since it has a white perloid pg. I do not want to rob the neck for the Jag.

Went surfing the net today for Jag necks & most are way up in the money that I really do not want to pay. Found a unfinished Allparts neck w/o a nut or the tuning pegs for $159 + free shipping. I may go w/ that one & put a nut in, get some repro tuners & finish it. Also found some very nice repro decals on Ebay for all years of Fender Strats, Teles, Jags, etc. Since everything will be made by Fender I don't think I'll feel too guilty putting a Jag decal on. I plan on keeping her & if I ever sell then I will not pass it off as a "real Fender" & let the person know about the neck. I browsed Warmoth a little & USA Customs but I assume that to get one from either place will be around $300 but no nut but finished if I wanted them to do it.

Anybody got any thoughts on the quality of an Allparts neck? If I do get one, what type of laquer can I get to finish the neck. I do not like that real yellow vintage color. Can't I get some type of laquer in a spray can at Home Depot to finish & protect the wood. Does it have to be a laquer or should I use some other type of clear finish that will give me a smooth slick feel? I know that only 2 people have chimed in on my original post so I'm not expecting a lot of answers.

Peace,
Jake

No idea, I don't bother building parts instruments any more as what I want is now available: 9.5" radius 24" scale instruments.
