Ok - so I'm the new front man in an established band. The project is evolving into what will be about 75% new material for the band, but they have some solid material that is definitely worth keeping, including Black Magic Woman.
I've played the song a zillion times in any key behind other singers. I can easily sing it in the crooner voice, but this is a rock band. In rock voice by the second verse my "accent" comes out and sounds like a country boy trying to do a Santana tune. This is not an issue in any other song.
I've tried singing to the cd in the headphones and the playback still sounds country.
Ideas?

Toss in a reggae sort of phrasing...not too much, and add a touch of "eye-land" accent. The tune works pretty well with a little Caribbean angle.

dont hold notes out for very long- this gives it a crooner vibe. It is also where accents can come across.
also if you can mange some upper throat constriction you will get that rock "growl" to toughen up the vocals

I learned a trick at a vocal seminar a couple years ago. While driving in the car, I sing through a straw. I have a few straws cut into 3" lengths for this.
The straw forces the diaphragm into the correct place as well as the throat.
That forced correct breathing quickly became habit and it has had several benefits.
It extended my range, helped my voice last all night, and changed the quality of my voice, in a very good way.
There have always been characteristics of my voice I wasn't crazy about. This practice trick actually corrected those characteristics.
Who knows? It could possibly help with the accent thing.
