Life gets in the way of my G.A.S.

This is a topic I don't think we've discussed (and it's kind of unique to lefties)...and somebody's got to pull this Lefty Forum out of the basement! No posts here in over half a month!

So, we lefties often have to order sight unseen. We don't have the luxury of walking into a shop and playing lots of guitars to find the right feel and tone...it's often a crap shoot! (Unless you live near Southpaws in Houston...)

So which guitar(s) didn't live up to your hopes and expectations, and were sold or permanently cased?

For me it's Fender Strats and Teles - but for different reasons.

I don't get along with American Standard Strats for one reason - the necks are just too small/thin for my liking (MIM Strats are even worse). I love everything else about American Strats - the tone, the shape of the body...but I'd have to go to the Custom Shop to get the right neck shape!

So I stick with my Warmoth Strats, all of which either have a 1.75" nut or at least the boatneck profile. One of them even has a set of (lefty) American Series pickups in it and it sounds great!

With Teles - I just don't like the tone of the middle position on a standard Tele...it's too nasally or hollow sounding or something - I can't quite describe it.

If there's a humbucker in the neck (or a mini or P-90) it changes the tone with both pups enough that it sounds better to my ears...but I don't think Fender makes any lefties with a non-standard pup configuration (maybe a lefty with a mini in the neck...but it's close to $2K).

How about you?

Which lefties have 'left' because they weren't 'right'?

I could never bond with Stratocasters. I had a mid 90's Mexican strat and a 2002 American Series strat. I just prefer humbuckers over single coil pups.

"I just prefer humbuckers over single coil pups."

That's why I built this one:

Les Paul owners will probably roll their eyes if they read this, but the weight of my 8 1/2-pound lefty MIM Tele is more than I like. My only other electric is a 6-pound MIK Casino and the difference is substantial.

The Tele has a Callaham bridge and CS '51 Nocasters that are fine pickups. I have a Klein mini humbucker for the neck that I swap in from time to time for a different sound and it is nice...may be a humbucking bridge pickup would be a better match for it, I want try that sometime.

So, I'm going to keep the Tele, but may be looking to replace the body with a lighter one.

too many guitars and not enough hands

There's been one or two but not that many

A Raven West Tele thin line with p 90's hated the neck way too much shoulder did not feel comfortable at all offloaded it

couldn't bond with a USA Standard Tele, its been cased no point offloading it wont get close to what I want for it at present

The neck and pups and overall feel wasn't right

which suck because I love tele's there my perfect guitar My 52 RI gets used all the time

While my MIJ 62 RI is a great guitar I like the Japanese profile necks.

jury is still out on my les paul 60's special with p90's the fretboard edges are too square all it probably needs is to roll the fretboard edges a bit and it'd be fine also don't know if like the baked maple feel

and your right mikey

"Unless you live near Southpaws in Houston"

wish I did because I just enquired about a guitar there and whether theyed ship it to Australia etc. and the reply I got wasn't great

like they couldn't be bothered seemed in the way it was written as its too much hard work... we don't want your money

anyway back on topic like I said not too many I didn't bond with and offload but when you do offload a guitar its a tough especially a lefty guitar and in Australia there's not much of a market

If you were asking Southpaws about the special run of Epi Casino's they're doing, they probably figure they can sell 'em all state side, so why mess with overseas shipping...

...I was going to order one, but it's a want, not a need right now; I might take my chances on them having a few left, or on picking one up cheaper 2nd hand later...
