Hi there, have a Squier Mini strat which has been lying in my sisters house for several years in an open gigbag.

Given it a good clean new strings (ddarios 009), cut the nut and setup the saddles but plays quite out of tune and the action is horrible.

whats the best way to proceed to get it playable ? (for a 7 year old )

you can either tune it up to g or put much heavier strings on it. i think i have 11s on mine (could be 12s, but i doubt it), and it stays in tune quite well. i was able to intonate it fine, too.

the heavier strings are needed to keep the strings at tension while tuned to e with a shorter scale length.

oh -- make sure to check the screws on the bridge. mine were all loose when i got it, causing the bridge to rise a little. that'll mess things up.

thanks for that how does it play with 11s ? I ask as it's for a child so want to keep it as easy to play as possible

with the shorter scale, 11s on the mini feel (to me) like 9s on my strat. the kid won't have any trouble with it.
