I owned a Starcaster back in the late 70's, I really liked that guitar but in lean times it had to go. Now Fender brings it back but without the one thing that made it a better choice than a 335 for me - a master volume control. Pity.

From what I understand, the original also was string-thru body, where the remake has a stop tailpiece.
I've been dying to try one out at a music store someplace, but if I bought one I'd definitely have to do something about that headstock...

"I'd definitely have to do something about that headstock..."

In my opinion it's part of it's allure!

BTW I have one and it took me some time to connect with it. It is heavy! I use 10 gauge on all my guitars but I was fighting the Starcaster too much with the factory installed 10's. I dropped down to 09"s on this guitar and it made the difference to me. Fit and finish are very good on this Chinese made instrument. Traditionally not a big fan of glossy necks but it really isn't a deterrent.

The bridge on the originals was not as well-thought-out as a Tele or Strat bridge. It was a big fat klunky cast affair with cast saddles.

I'm not a fan of the old design. Nostalgia be damned!

....I also think the old ones had issues with the neck to body connection being unstable.
