I have a AVRI 54 thin skin strat and a AVRI 52 thin skin telecaster (humbucker in the neck position)..... Both special runs from Wildwood Guitars. These are a couple of great playing/sounding guitars and I've been told they are custom shop quality without the price. I've never owned or played a custom shop guitar, but for those of you who have, what is your opinion?

Are custom shops really the higher echelon?

I owned one Custom Shop Stratocaster quite a few years back--probably somewhere around 2006 or 2007 is my guess. Beautifully made guitar, no question about it. It played really well, too. But tonally it just didn't compare to my #1 Strat which is an exceptionally well made (and pretty chunky neck) American Standard Stratocaster from late '98. I changed pups a few times and it made shades of difference, but it never came up to the rich and varied tones of my #1. Don't know why that #1 sounds so good (no matter what pups are in it). Sold the Custom Shop eventually. But, yes...a beautiful guitar, a real quality product. But ultimately that is not a guarantee of tonal supremacy.

YMMV...

I prefer American Deluxe Strats to any CS model I've tried over the years. Maybe if the CS wasn't so focused on vintage and vintage-style guitars, I'd be interested.

The Am Dlx Strats have the modern and "custom" features I need and play and sound great.

Well that settles it---my strat is the best for me.

"...my strat is the best for me."

That is certainly a truism for many of us.

I agree with 5Strats, too. I'm not always in search of vintage specs or relicing, personally, which is often the emphasis from the Custom Shop.

While I've played many Custom Shop Strats, my #1 is easily the best guitar I've laid hands on. While it certainly gets many compliments from other knowledgeable musicians, the most important thing about it is how it speaks to ME. It plays great, sounds killer, is made really well and never disappoints. It is definitely MINE. Is there a Custom Shop guitar out there that could do likewise? Perhaps. But this guitar ain't going nowhere.

It all depends on what works, sounds and plays best for you. There is no one "best" that suits everybody.

And remember that guitars vary in playability and tone.

If you play five of the same model (whether CS or factory production), one *will* rise above the others in playability and tone.

If you play 100 guitars...same thing.
