Hey all, I am planning on buying a pair of StewMac's Parsons St. buckers for the "LP" copy kit I am attempting. I gather they are modeled after old PAFs and are a rather mild humbucker by today's standards, but that makes them more versatile.
I know our illustrious Peegoo really likes them. I would just like to know about the analysis that Peegoo or others have of these pups or similar pickups so that I can judge my pickup choice. Of course I would like to get as close (in everything but looks and weight) to a '59 LP as I can. On looks, I am an amateur, and on weight, this is a Precision chambered kit, and my shoulder will thank me for that.
Thanks!

They are all that and a bag of chips, Bill. I am already on record regarding my opinion of these pickups =o)
If you're familiar with the Gibson Classic 57 or the Duncan 59 pickups (which are fairly similar to each other), think of the Stew Mac PS humbucker as the same, with a little less power. "Less power" means much chimier cleans, which is a really good thing. The unbalanced coils helps give them real character. If you need to kick up the juice, add a boost or overdrive to your chain.

Any opinion on how they compare to Tonerider AC2's or GFS Professional Series Alnico II Humbuckers?

JohnS, sorry, no info for you on that; I've never messed around with the AC2s or GFS models.

Geno and I can say that the Toneriders City Limits SCs are very good; very tasteful Strat pickups. He installed and I use. Great sounding, but that is another matter.
Power is something you can always add. My favorite amp, an Allen, is plenty loud for anything I want to do, and I have my ever touchy TS9DX to help out. Since Pearly Gates, with great help from the Rev., has done some of my fav tones of all times and it has PAFs, albeit possibly overwound to some degree, I want as close to PAFs as possible. It sounds like the Parsons St. pickups will fit the bill; Thank You to Geno for fine advice!

Peegoo says Alnico 5 in neck and Alnico 2 in Bridge. I believe that is what he said.

Yup. That's the combination I have. And that choice was based on Seymore Duncan's recommendations to me.

You got a rec from a heavy hitter. It is kind of like me getting a recommendation about a speaker by Ted Weber, by email, a few days before he died. That was very sad.
Thanks for the good info.

I decided to go read the reviews for all of the StewMac Golden Age buckers, including the Parsons Street buckers, and low and behold, the ones that got the best reviews of all were the Golden Age Humbuckers, plain olds. Peegoo, do you or any other people want to address that? Thanks!

BTW, I bought the Parsons Streets. Right now I am doing the finish work on the guitar and when I have that done, the other guitar player in the band and I will get together and wire it up. He is better at soldering than I am. Hopefully I will solder and he will supervise.

I put Parson St pups and a bone nut in my Epi Custom LP. Very happy with the result. Clearer than the stock pups by a mile, chimier too.
I found an Epi LP on CL today that I'm going to buy. Honeyburst (great looker) and it's loaded with 57 Classics and Grover tuners. Maybe redundant tones, but I'm a sucker for the honey burst

How experienced are you with vintage pickups? I heard some 60s Gibson buckers in an ES 335, I think. They sounded pretty good. Most I have heard I am sure were on records and on stage.
You might compare the 57 Classics with the Parson St. pups.

I'm watching this thread as I'm contemplating a set of pups for a sort of "project" guitar.
WARNING to anyone else doing the same: Some of these pups are single conductor only. They won't work if you have coil tapping/splitting. Which means that they won't work for me.
Question: The Stew Macs (individually) are about the same price as several other similar pups (Dimarzio PAF 36th, etc). Any thoughts on some of those?
Granted, the Stew Macs purchased as a set are quite a bit cheaper. But over the long haul another $30-40 won't matter much.

Opening this up again.
Thinking about putting a set of these into an Epiphone Dot Deluxe.
The idea is the Golden Age Parsons Street Hot Humbucker, Alnico 2 in the bridge and a regular Golden Age Parsons Street Humbucker, Alnico 5 in the neck.
I'm thinking the hot in the bridge will be the ticket, and at 9.5K, they aren't over the top hot, but should kick things up a notch in a 335 type guitar.
I don't think there should be too much of a volume difference between this neck and bridge combo ?

That should work. You can always adjust volume balance with pickup heights too.
