Wanna see how bad the system is really gamed?

Rent out a HUD approved house.

It's an eye-opener.

The developer of the condo highrise we live in got tax breaks for offering a certain percentage of the units at below market price. "Affordable Housing" is the term, and the idea is that some of those jobs are essential for downtown residents, such as housekeepers and waiters and such, should be able to afford to live where they work. That is the concept. You have to own the unit for seven years, after which you can sell at market rates to anyone.
Here is how it worked out. Wealthy doctors and attorneys purchased them in the name of their college-student children, let them live there while they completed their education, and are now selling them at sweet profits, with no capital gains tax. You had to be connected to get your ap approved, with no doubt some back door benefits going on.
So, taxpayers help private developer, city officials sell favors, rich people get effortlessly richer.
But surely SOME lower income people were helped you ask? Only if you consider foreclosures and bankruptcy "help". I know, I bought one of the foreclosures at a great price. Mine was in great shape. Many were trashed when the residents were evicted. The fact is that poor people cannot afford to live in a luxury highrise on the income levels that qualified them to make the purchase.
But the people who put the law in place feel so very good about themselves, and that's what counts, right?

Give a kid a fish, he eats that day. Teach the kid to fish, he eats every day. We, the people, give away way too much fish.

Jhawkr for the win.

The gubmint wants sheep, pays for them, consoles them, supports them, and asks only in return a vote.

Damn if we are not forked, as "we the taxpayers, pay for those that do not", all in the name of social justice.

Belize looks better every day.

What's going on in Costa Rica? I remember a guy that used to go on the Tonight Show who was an ex-pat living down there. My money certainly won't go far in the USA for long and our government is rapidly approaching banana republic status anyway.

Hmm, so why would Costa Rica be so great? Perhaps because they have national health care and no army....

Yes this current drop is unsettling and scary, but if you own gold as a long term investment I don't think there is cause for alarm.
When all this gov economy pumping ends we will see inflation and gold will rise along with that.
If I were rich I would see this as a buying opportunity. We bought gold to have something to hand down to the kid and think it was still a wise choice That's my 2c worth.

I was thinking about "escaping" to Costa Rica in my retirement.
Bad idea?
