NOS, Closet, Relic.... I know the difference between the 3 but... when they make these guitars does one version get priority for the best woods... or are they bascially the same guitar but the only differnce beinig the way they are finsihed (NOS, Closet, Relic).

Thanks

All custom shop strats get the better wood over standard factory production models

the custom shop get the pick of the timber usually the larger pieces so the bodies are either 1 or more common 2 piece construction

the NOS, Closet and Relic are just finishing process it only matters on the colour choice translucent over solid

the prime pieces of ash and alder the ones with nice grain and look get used on the translucent (see through colours)

not a major factor when solid colours are used you dont see the grain

neck wood different story

I have a theory that the Relics get the best woods, because they charge more for them, and want to sell more of them. I've heard some nice, CC's and NOS models, but as a group, by far, the Relics sound the best to my ears. I don't have a definitive sample size, maybe around 100 Time Machines all told.

All the one's that make my ears do a double-take have been relics, but again, too small a sample size.

Tyrone

are we talking heavy relics?

becuase and guitar with minimal finish should by all accounts resonate more.

but it could be the faux rust on the parts making it sound better

Well, less finish /generally/ equals louder acoustic sound, but my theory is, since they charge more for them (and it's only slightly more labor-intensive) I think they tend to make them better guitars so they'll sell. But the wood for all three "trim lines" is high quality, I just think of that high quality palette, the relics get most of the great stuff. But it's just a pet conspiracy-theory, of which I don't generally partake.

As I understand the situation, all of the NOS and many of the others are made on the regular prduction line, with the more choice ones being sidetracked for the CC and Relic treatment. The Masterbuilt ones are fully selected, marked up and assembled by the Custom Shop boys & girls.

I've had several Custom Shop Strats & Teles, starting with a John Page 35th Anniversary Strat I should never have parted with, a Cunetto of each that got sold off and now a '56 CC. All have been excellent guitars. With the pricing getting out of hand now I'm not sure they're worth the money, but they used to be quite afforadble and fun.
