I've found singing without a mic has helped with my pitch control and technique. I was one of these people who could only sing with a mic and "enhancement" (reverb, echo etc). My voice has improved a lot since the days where I did a lot of background vocals and some leads.

Anybody else find they've improved through dealing with their unaltered voice?

I find that singing while playing acoustic guitar makes a tremendous difference in learning s song. You can feel the chord in the reverberations of the guitar and then you can match pitch a lot easier.

This is how I learn all my tunes now. We all hear about finger memory - this is vocal chord memory. I find I sing the same way with the band that I do when its just me and my acoustic.

Good tip gman! I will give that a try as I have a couple of new songs I am starting to learn and have been in the same situation- I can sing great with the mic and PA and my iPhone plugged into the PA. But I have to take the 'training' wheels off. I'll grab my acoustic instead on my next practice!
