FDP Forum / Fender Product Reviews / Fender AVRI 62 strat

Jul 29th, 2012 07:33 AM   Edit   Profile

I've only seen one review of this guitar on the forum and thought I would add my impressions. First let me say that my main guitar from 1969 to 2002 was the real deal 62 strat which got retired as it was in my opinion worn out. After going through a bunch of replacements I settled on a 2006 reissue so I think my comparisons to the original are pretty accurate. I'm using the same strings and played both through the same rig and I honestly think the AVRI is the better instrument overall.

Differences: the headstock decal lacks pat. pending numbers, tuners lack the Kluson label, nut is synthetic versus bone, dot markers are perloid versus clay, nitro finish but a urethane undercoat and the block is pressed steel with deep ferrels versus cast with shallow ferrels. The only differnce that affects the guitar in my opinion is the block which can be improved with a Callaham. Again, it is an opinion but I believe you get a bit better sustain and possibly a bit brighter tone.

The playability is very much like the original. Neck shape, fret size and general feel is indistinguishable from the original. The 57/62 pups have good vintage characteristics. The original 62 pups actually were not as good on the middle and bridge pups but maybe a bit sweeter on the neck but the difference is subjective and not worth worrying about. I don't contemplate any changes except the aforementioned block.

I would have to say that you would be hard pressed to find a guitar with this much vintage vibe at this price point. It definitely delivers the goods and while I had a long love affair with the original the AVRI is more than a suitable replacement.

I also own an AVRI 57 strat and an AVRI 52 tele and remain convinced Fender has done an excellent job of this series of guitars. For the record my AVRI 62 replaced a 2004 American Deluxe ash bodies strat with Kinman Blues pups, Kinman harness and Callaham block. A very nice modern strat but just couldn't deliver the vintage type tones I crave. If vintage is your passion, this guitar represents the most bang for your buck.
