These look pretty interesting to me. Nice accoutrements - f-hole binding, hump back fret markers, etc. Looks nice, how do they play and sound?

I think I'd like one, but for my budget, too much money to buy without trying first. Waiting onthe local GC in town to come through...

Is this the same as the G5420T? I find the light green one incredibly sexy.

I liked the one I played at Guitar Center. I played a 5422 double cutaway at a local music shop and really liked it. Didn't get a chance to play it amplified though but it sure was a sweet playing guitar.

I recently got the Jones for a Gretsch full hollow body and did my homework to learn the differences. Found a Gretsch forum that's almost as informative as this one ;o)

Because I wanted a full hollow body my choices were narrowed to the 5120 and 5420T. I A/B'ed a 5120 and a 5420 at GC one day. Basic construction of the two guitars is essentially identical; the 5120 isn't as fancy as the 5420 (no f-hole binding and thumbnail fret markers) and is loaded with rather generic sounding humbuckers.

The 5420 has hump block fret marker inlays, bound f-holes and is loaded with Blacktop Filtertrons which, although aren't TV Jones or DeArmonds, make some righteously unmistakeable Gretsch'y tones.

5420 was a no-brainer for me because I would have immediately upgraded pups, wiring, etc. Then I stumbled across a FSR smoke green 5420 on MF closeout: after closeout discount, free shipping, and 9.5% CA sales tax credit (tax is only 7.25% in my county) it was $620 delivered. Price was so low that I installed a Compton bridge, a TV Jones wiring harness, and bought a TKL HSC and my total investment is still less than the street price of a 5420 alone. EXCELLENT value even at street price!!

If I keep rambling I'll have t post this in the "Reviews" forum.

Guess I didn't address playability in my last post:
Setup was near perfect out of the box. I think I adjusted the truss rod by 1/4 turn or so, and lowered the bridge by 1/2 turn or so. I also took the time and trouble to sand the bridge base to match the body curvature and polished the frets with some 0000 steel wool. Bought a bone nut that I haven't installed yet.

Neck is kind of a C shape, full but not overly chunky (arthritis in my thumbs is causing me to eschew thin necks). Action with 11's is low and very comfortable. Bigsby works well and stays in tune for days.

Bottom line: this guitar is absolutely FUN to play and worth every penny (with or without the upgrades)!

That's real purdy. Odd that your guitar a) looks nothing like green, b)link shows $799, expected 9/17/13 (so is it really a closeout?) and is priced almost $100 less than the non FSR version.

I recently thinned my herd and offed an Agile Cool Cat loaded with GFS Liverpools, leaving me without a Gretsch/wannabe. I did so because I told myself I don't use it, don't need it.

I really, REALLY want the Aspen Green G5420T. That's a fair amount of scratch for MIK (or is it MIC?).

Congrats on the nice score.

Love my 5422T, and the 5420's that I've played were just as good.

The Blacktops are amazing sounding pups, and these guitars are worth every penny.

littleuch -
Apparently the one I bought a couple of months ago was among the last of an FSR lot (Smoke Green apparently non-standard color). IIRC MF price had been $849, close out price was $639 but delivered price was $620 & change. I guess the FSR lot due in September will sell for $799. Yes, it's MIK.

The Aspen Green is nice but is obviously green in color. The Smoke Green is somewhat of an enigma: in certain lighting it's ivory or cream, but in other lighting its a creamy pale green. The price was so stupid cheap I couldn't pass it up no matter what color but the Smoke Green really grows on you! Check the MF reviews on the linked page for more.
