I have a 65 Mustang but the headstock decal just says "Fender" and "Offset Contour Body". No "Mustang" decal at all. The neck is stamped "8FEB65A".

Do you think this is the original decal or some kind of replacement?

All pics are available in photobucket at URL below

Thanks for any info!

Possible somebody scraped the model name off to pass it off as "Yea, that's my Fender Strat, see the Fender?" type deal or it simply took damage there and somebody 'cleaned up' rather than have a "Mu ng", but I'd assume replacement decal done poorly or strangely.

Something bugs me about the board though, it doesn't seem quite right for the Mustangs I've handled from the era.

Could just be the photo, could be variance.

Could also be a swap from something else "cheaper" in the Fender line that worked later to fix a trashed original neck, or to complete a pile of parts, et cetera.

Could be all 100% right.

Not enough detail to do more than broadly wave and speculate.

I have a 65 Mustang and yours there looks good all the way 'round, except for the decals. The round-lam fingerboard looks right. The fretwork looks original.

The wood is too uniform in color to have had part of the decal removed; every instance I've seen of this, there's a "shadow" in the wood where decal used to be. This looks to be a partial re-fin neck (just the headstock), probably done in the 70s or thereabouts. Back then, any shmo could order headstock decals from Fender.

Thanks reverendrob and PeeGoo.

It looks that way to me too PeeGoo. I don't actually have the guitar yet so when I do I can make a closer inspection and report back.
