All else being the same, in a blind test would the average person notice the tonal difference in a new VS an old Martin? Is old better, or just different?

I recently played a friend's 40 year old Gibson, and the tone was just outstanding, but then I don't have any reasonable comparison, as the only other acoustic I've played over the past few years is my Seagull.

I've said this before. A guitar built 30, 40, 50 years ago, if it was good then it will be better know as the woods dry out a bit more and years of vibration do whatever "magic" it is that they do. A POS built 30, 40 ,50 years ago probably was scrapped somewhere down the line and hasn't survived until today. So, yeah, an older instrument will sound better for several reasons.
Would the average person notice it? Probably not. Would the player notice it? Perhaps. If you're playing it and it sound sgood it will inspire you.

My guess is very few players would know the difference. Not to say they wouldn't sound different but know, conclusively, which was which over an over, well...

Hey now, I know a lot of folks who swear their ears are better than an O-scope reading radio frequencies.

More power to 'em - even if most things they come across must have to drive them nuts.
