French toast is great except I have to eat a huge amount of it just to feel satisfied. This is something I've discovered with most carb based foods.

Cook your French toast in butter. The flavor is cooked through and you don't need to add butter later. Also add real vanilla extract to the egg mix.

Syrup is a matter of taste. I prefer Aunt Jemima or Log Cabin style syrup with French toast. For a real treat try boysenberry syrup. Real maple syrup is best left to be very lightly drizzled over bacon and eggs. Of course real maple donut icing is the shiz!

For me French Toast is a sort of split-personality food. I like it with syrup the traditional way, but just as often I eat it with catsup.

(Feel free to be grossed out.)

"Carb overload, blood sugar spiking, gaaaaaaaa!"

This is why if I have pancakes or french toast, I NEED to have some sort of meat with it, like bacon or sausage or else I'm loopy all day.

Dadical - what exactly is wrong with REAL maple syrup, anyway? The real stuff is the only way to go!

Also, it is great mixed with bourbon as a chicken or fish brush on for grilling.

"Dadical - what exactly is wrong with REAL maple syrup, anyway? The real stuff is the only way to go!"

Nothing wrong with it, but it is so sweet it's almost bitter and falls into a cooler or almost herbal flavor in contrast to the warmer sweet flavor of Log Cabin style syrup, especially with a spot of vanilla in the mix. Berry based syrups work well with butter and vanilla, but pure maple makes my tongue go schizo when it hits the sour sensors after the salt in the butter.

Something I learned from my late grandmother for french toast: sprinkle sugar on top, no syrup. And Karo syrup on my pancakes, it's a depression era thing.

Ah, Karo syrup. Reminds me of my own Grandmother and her larger than dinner plate pancakes.

Not only Karo syrup but margerine that, me as a little kid, had to mix with the yellow dye.

French toast: Eggs, vanilla, orange juice, and a pinch of sugar. Cooked in a mixture of butter an olive oil. Aunt Jemima low sugar syrup.. got to watch the diet.
But must also be accompanied by some form of pig meat.

For breakfast today, 2 pancakes, two eggs over medium, and 2 sausages, half gallon of de-caf..
good to go. No need to eat until dinner time.

If you want to make the best French toast, cut the bread the day before and let it get stale. You can thank me later.

King's Hawaiian bread is perfect for French Toast. Add a bit of Vanilla to the egg mixture. Yummy!

Don't forget to add a little milk to the egg mix; half & half is richer, and cream for Sundays.
