It's called grace and it is not earned. It is given and everyone needs it. Some, like me, more than others.

We kind of got at into last night at the family reuion.

Aren't too many practicing Catholics in my family, nor in the Church, for that matter any longer.

After hearing some REALLY bizarre stories, I can kinda see why.

Now you can't slam me on this, because being raised Catholic, the Catholic church has always been about one thing. Money. It's a fact.

As rich as you might be or however you may or have may not have socked into the collection baskets, you can't buy your way into heaven.

I truly believe our time here on Earth (and I'm sure we'll meet brehtren from other galaxies millions of years old) is still governed by the Golden Rule.

You do your best and treat your fellow man with respect, and every thing else all falls into place.

It really boils down to one word, this whole thread, IMO.

Faith.

Personally, I tend to believe those who say they are seeking the truth, and doubt those who say they've found it.

To clarify, I *was* seeking the truth at one time. Now I know everything.

The Truth is not hard to find. It's there for anyone who looks.

And believe me, without grace, I would be in big trouble.

I was seeking the truth before I found what I believe to be the truth. That isn't saying I know or understand everything because I don't. It's easy to believe someone who says they don't know, isn't it? It takes no effort, requires no thought, no position.

"It takes no effort, requires no thought, no position."

Agreed. It simply is the truth as you believe in it. Is that faith? Maybe. I don't have the answer.

Is there a higher power? I have no doubt. And I don't fear him/her/it. I just long to be with God at the end of my days.

Come on, TT. We grew up as Catholics. What's wrong with that? Nothing. I totally agree with you above about "fellow man" and "Faith." If that is what you have taken from earlier beliefs and what is what you practice today after years as an adult regarding present life and after life, then I am in awe of you as I am of many others.

My bizarre story: My relative Fr. Dave Myers is a Jesuit priest as I mentioned in a post above. He has been living in a two room hut with a mud floor just Southeast of Phoenix in a town called
Guadalupe, AZ. for the last four decades. He struggled as a young radical thinker about present life, but not so much about the after life. He helps poor Native Americans with both their civic and spiritual hopes and problems. I will not belabor this.

I humbly resent your Catholic Church comments. If you want to give this thread a real quick like afterlife, let's everybody start criticizing each others' religions. That'll do it.

Also, in another thread where I posted, I said I am a fan of yours, TT, and I mean it.

Humbly, and hoping for a cushy afterlife for everybody, TF

Edited to add the subject of my story is a practicing lawyer in addition to his spiritual community duties.

Why bother seeking something if you won't believe yourself when you think you've found it?

FWIW, my wife is Catholic, and I'm Baptist. I go to her church but she goes to mine more than I go to hers.

We both believe the basic things about being a Christian...but I really don't understand the Catholic church. I won't go into that, and I'm not bashing the Catholic church. She grew up differently than I did, but I know she believes.

Because life is about the journey, not the destination.

As a Protestant who is an employee of a Catholic high school, I'm a minority. But we also have one Jewish teacher and a number of Muslim students. The interaction is interesting and very positive where it comes to how well many of the actual values, as applied to life situations, really mesh.

This is only my observation, but I've met a lot of Catholics who are rather forthrightly agnostic on the heaven issue, and really consider it secondary to living a good life for its own sake.

Our church is a potpourri of denominations. Our motto was borrowed from the early church:

In essentials, unity
In opinions, liberty
In all things, love

"Because life is about the journey, not the destination."

I agree in general but think many need the red x on their maps to make journey more worth while.

I don't think any religion has it 100% right. But there are areas where many agree.
