Well, how about:
Man has invented myths of all kinds in an attempt to somehow grasp the insistent urge, the idea the recurs in every person, in every generation, in every culture, that we are somehow more than just another link in the food chain. Because, beyond our understanding, we just know it to be so.

"And the fact is, Lefty no one has come back from the dead yet, to confirm either what you or I believe, no matter if there appears to be no commonality as I had offered, hoped."
Actually, I beg to differ. There have been many accounts of people being "clinically dead", only to revive, sometimes as much as a day later in modern times. Historical record has Jesus rising from the dead after 3 days. There are many, many accounts throughout history. Just because there is no iphone video record of the "other side", doesn't mean it's not there. There are also many personal accounts of experiences by those who have died and returned.
My own mother, during childbirth with my little sister, was revived after complications. When she regained consciousness, she told the nurses she talked to Jesus and Jesus had told her it was not her time yet. This was before my mother became a Christian. It changed her life because the experience was so profound. It's not something she tells a lot of people. She told me when I was about 30 or so. Mom is 84 now.

What jhawkr said +1
But, I don't know Jim's mom so I can't really prove that she talked to Jesus.
(Now, that's cracking wise)

I agree with your statements entirely, jhawker. My own twin brother, who's career as a surgeon, led him to quite a few patients who've had scrapes, occurrences with afterlife around emergency rooms and such. One well documented case is of a young person plunging by automobile into a lake/river near Coulee, Wa, staying in the drink or well over twenty minutes. I met the ambulance driver about a year after the actual incident. Just in the news last week, in South America, if I recall correctly, a baby was pronounced dead. The death certificate had already been signed off on by hospital physicians, only to come back to life when the mother insisted on holding the child. This was like after twenty four hours. but, I am sure that NOBODY from the real dead is going to show up some how and instruct us about the afterlife. I don't really think I had to include that last
sentence for you to understand what I believe, but I just did it anyway. My loving grandmother and my parents are dead forever. According to my humble belief, that doesn't mean they can't profoundly enlighten existence for us now in this life or in the afterlife. And I am not thinking about "help" from them, or help in afterlife from the fact that I enjoyed Sandy Koufax as a pitcher. A form of enlightenment is what I hope for and includes the positive accomplishments I have seen by humanity on this earth. It would also include trying to be kind to Lefty or how we as people have handled others less fortunate.
Heck, it looks like now I'm even getting caught up in this. I always try to keep things simple, however.

Why limit yourself? I'm sure expecting more than enlightenment when I go to the "afterlife. I'm expecting a whole new life.
Ok jhawkr, this thread came back to life!

Good point Ryder. I can go with that. Although I do have regular discussions about spirituality concerning the present life we have and how we or I behave on this earth with my cousin. He is a Jesuit priest and he married Peggy-O and myself. Frankly, we don't discuss afterlife much at all. Mostly the basics, like how I'm treating my neighbors, or doing my part to make for a better world/society. The little things that hopefully add up to make some sort of larger picture.

I saw a documentary on Sam Kinison's death. His friend, who was in the vehicle behind him, gave the following account:
"His brother and the others begged him to lay down and he did with his best friend, Carl LaBove, who had been in the following van. holding his head in his hands. At first it looked like there were no serious injuries to Kinison, but within minutes he suddenly said to no one in particular "I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die." LaBove later said "it was as if he was having a conversation, talking to some unseen somebody else" some unseen person. Then there was a pause as if Kinison was listening to the other person speak. Then he asked "But why?" and after another pause LaBove heard him clearly say: "Okay, Okay, Okay.’ LaBove said: "The last ‘Okay’ was so soft and at peace...Whatever voice was talking to him gave him the right answer and he just relaxed with it. He said it so sweet, like he was talking to someone he loved." Kinson then lost consciousness."
So, not only do those who have died and came back to life can give accounts of an afterlife, but so can those who are about to die.

I believe. Some things you have to accept on faith. Does the light in the refrigerator really go out when you close the door? Are you SURE? (:>)

I can't say that I *know* what I believe to be true but I can say that I'm confident and certain. I'm so certain in fact that I've invested my entire life for it.

Here's the way I look at it, if I'm right I live eternity in paradise, and a non believer goes to the basement.
If hes right neither one of us will know.

Unless, of course, that other group on the other side of the world that considers you an infidel turns out to have the real truth, in which case you're in the basement after all!
Just throwing out possibilities! : )
disclaimer: the above is a non-serious post in an attempt at humor. However, in a world full of people with such certainties, and their truths differ, some of them just have to be wrong.

You don't have to go to the other side of the world for that. There are some Protestants who believe Catholics are going to Hell, and vice versa. Pentacostals who think other Protestants are going to Hell. What if one of those interpretations of Christianity turns out to be the one and only true faith? Even if you rooted for the right team you might end up in the basement because you didn't cheer correctly.
And on the other side of the world, there are some Sunni Muslims who think Shia Muslims are infidels, and vice versa.

Like jhawkr, what I believe is the truth and I know it. And I'm not going to worry about it.
Can I prove it? Nope. Do I care? Nope.
I mean, I care because I wish more people knew the truth.

Jerry, everyone knows there's no pain in heaven. That's why Geddy Lee won't be allowed to sing.
