Here's my take on it. My 52RI with Lollar Specials direct into a Dr. Z.

Glad to hear you're doing well. Me too - recently got another "all clear"!
Teles are interesting guitars and can be amazingly versatile. I have 2 Teles and one Strat and lately the 52RI has become my go-to. A while ago I dropped the Lollar Specials in and man, what a difference compared to the stock Fenders. 3-dimensional, touch sensitive, sounds full and almost jazz-like when picked light and it really growls when I hit it hard. We do blues, classic rock, R&B, Motown and it covers it all. I even use it for the Stones B!tch and The Who's Can't Expain. Definitely not a Nashville guitar. Plus I can do the open G thing and tune right back to standard with no trouble at all. It took me a while (years...) to bond with mine, though. They are different animals than Strats. I read on this forum that you have to let a Tele "play you", which I take to mean that once you figure out the voice, you can learn to make it speak.

One of the players for Slipknot has a signature Tele. (:oD
Also - John 5 plays heavy stuff using Teles.
You did mean "heavy," right?

Check out some Smithereens. Jim Babjak usually plays a Tele plugged straight into a Marshall half stack.

Not heavy, but definitely not twang either; a lot of early Steely Dan was played on teles.

Yeah...and Terry Kath of Chicago Transit Authority. Though his was certainly a heavily doctored Tele.

Another just came to mind; I've heard that Norman Greenbaum's 'Spirit in the Sky' was played on a tele.
