I have been approached and asked to do a tribute to Neil Young. I never in my life thought of dressing the part but have played his music a longtime and thats what is needed. Its just an acoustic solo act to be paired up on same bill with other impersonater type act. It sounds a little insane and I am having trouble wrapping myself around it. It's money....right? your 2 cents...please. I checked out other neil tributes since and feel good about my presentation....
Thanks

If it's a "tribute," I'd do it. If it's supposed to be an "impersonation," I'd pass.
I think a "tribute" gives you some leeway to do NY's music your way, doesn't have to be an exact copy.
I'd be honored to do such a thing, if anyone ever asked.

tribute bands are supposed to look the part. Get a flannel and a long hair wig (if you dont have the hair for it)- they can be as cheap as $10 online and wear jeans. If you want you can get the stick on pork chop sideburns but there aint much to looking like neil. Not like its a Motely Cru or Kiss tribute.
this is what is expected. If you sound like him it aint much more to look like him. Take the paycheck and have fun with it.

personally I'd like to (with a little imagination) think its neil up there not hear someone put their spin on his tunes. That would defeat the whole thing. Tributes are (for me) bands playing a song each from an artist. Now dressing the part, playing an acoustic concert so to speak, I would want to be fooled (off and on) Its just never been asked of me. I guess I'm cool with it if people could dig it.

Why such a big deal? Do it! Who cares? I doubt you'll be pigeonholed as a N.Y. impersonator.
Make it fun, go really over the top. Throw some odd cover as Neil, like Teen Spirit or My Funny Valentine. Make it obvious. People will love it.

If you can still sing in the key of D, and get that Neil twang into it, then more power to ya!
I think Neil tunes are way fun to play. Bouncy, even the downer ones.

I can see why you were approached - nice job, Gary!
And Neil has gone through so many "looks" that I don't know if you'd really need the wig (unless, of course you want to go that route).
He's taken to wearing hats a lot these days, so jeans, a flannel shirt, and a light-colored Fedora (like on the cover of "Comes A Time") would probably cover the appearance aspect.
And like others have said, if you're going to be asked to pay tribute to someone, Neil Young is a pretty good choice.

You could get that outfit ay any Salvation Army for cheap. I'd go along with what the other bands are doing, costume-wise.

I don't have to travel far to find an outfit like that. My closet is about 3 feet from the computer.
