Is this normal? I get the feeling it's not. I've heard this popping sound before with reverb though.
Could it be a ground problem?
It only happens while playing. It happens no matter where it is in the chain.
I know from my research here that a lot of you like the Holy Grail. I can take this back for store credit and have them order me a Holy Grail.
Also which model Holy Grail do you like and why?

Probably a bad pot...
I have the Holy Grail and it is OK and quiet, but mine is used and the control pot needs replacing.
The Spring/Hall reverbs are good, but without having a new pedal to try, the (Flerb???) setting is interesting but sort of unuseable with my current pedal. (Kind of like a phaser/ trem/reverse-reverb together???)
Wish it were new to figure out what I am hearing there!!
When I turn it up past mid-point, the volume drops out, but have never played one new, so I do know if this is the characteristics of the unit or just a bad control pot????
What is the value of that pot....25K like most active pickups???
Sorry for the high-jack here and hope you find what you need!
Best Regards, Woody

There is something wrong with the pedal, IF all your cords are OK.
One problem I run into occasionally is input/output jack static with new cords or pedals. I put a little Deoxit on the plug before plugging it into the jack where the static is happening. I only have to do this once. I think it's because of slightly dissimilar metals between the plug and jack creating the static.

What setting are you using? When I had an RV-5 and had it on the spring reverb setting, I found that the "sproink" tank emulation was more random than controllable.

I like very much your "sproink" definition of the spring reverb effect BrentD !
De ville, do yourself a favor and get your boss reverb pdal back and ask for a Hardwire RV-7 or a EH Hall of Fame!

"Open the battery compartment and let the popcorn out. (;oD"
5 that was the first thing I checked. ;)
BrentD, It only happens on spring reverb. I think your on to something. It's defiantly a sproink sound. It's annoying, and I don't have any control over it.
StratQuebec, Did you mean EH Cathedral? When I search EH Hall Of Fame, I didn't see any results. The Cathedral came up though with that search.
I as looking at the Cathedral at MF last week as it has the holy grail reverb in addition to all the other settings.
I might pop on that Cathedral.

De ville, the crummy spring setting with the random popping is why I sold the pedal. I LOVED the modulated reverb, but 99% of the time that I use reverb it's for sproinky surfy stuff. I bought an FRV-1 and it works a heck of a lot better for the springy stuff.
I don't have experience with any of the other ones you're looking at, but I certainly understand plunky random sounds coming out of an RV-5 on the spring setting. I can almost still hear it!

A healthy +1 on the Hardwire RV-7!
Very versatile (the Lexicon algorithms in this thing are top-notch). And it does the most realistic spring reverb sound I've ever heard in a pedal. It'll get down-right surfy with absolute none of the metallic harshness that most digital reverbs exhibit at extreme settings.

The Boss spring reverb sounds terrible. Everything else is great except for the spring reverb tone.
My Boss GT-10 has the spring reverb and you just get that "splash" sound from the reverb as if somebody kicked your spring reverb unit. Yuk!

Ya, you guy are sure right about the "metallic harshness" and "spash" sounds.
I agree the rest of the selections aren't bad. I'm taking it back. I haven't decided what to get yet, but I'm defiantly considering your choices.
Thanks!
Anyone tried the EH Cathedral yet?

I also vote for the Hardwire RV-7. had mine about a year now. it sounds great. I mostly use the plate and hall sounds, but all of the settings including the spring sound really good.
also it is a sturdy, well made pedal. easy to use and a fairly compact footprint.
speaking of compact, I also have TWO Malekko Chicklets! they pretty much only do a spring sound, but with the dwell and mix knobs you can get some pretty different sounds out of them. I love those little Chicklets. so small I have both of them on the same board with different settings... one with a subtle short verb setting and the other with the mix and dwell up for a drippy cavernous sound. both on at once rules!

Although it is not a pedal but my Fender Mustang III and Mustang V has great sounding digital reverbs.
The amp contains both the 63 Spring Reverb as well as the 65 Spring Reverb and they sound wonderful. Very authentic. No splash, sproing, harshness or any problems. It also has the Arena, Gated Reverbs etc not to mention other effects.
And the amp sounds beautiful and loud at 100 watts with Celestion. All I take with me to the gig now is my Mustang III and my 4 button switch.
And the whole package is only 299.00.
I know you are not looking for an amp but thought that I would let you know.

montana63, I'm certainly willing to give the Hardwire RV-7 a try. I'll have to see what the local shop wants for one. I know I can get one cheaper on line, but I'm going to use store credit with the Boss RV-5 return.
telegib, my main amp is a Marshall AVT150 combo. It has a bunch of really nice effects built in. All except for reverb. I'm always looking for an an amp. Affording one is another thing. ;)
Thanks for chiming in. I'll try to try that amp out anyways.

I went ahead and ordered the Hardwire RV-7. Sure looks well constructed.
I ordered it from my local shop. I love anticipating a gear delivery. :)

Congrads on the RV-7 De ville! Just a word about the batterie life: It's very short! It's normal with most digital pedals on the market anyway. I use the 1 spot power supply to feed the RV-7, a Bad Monkey, and a MXR Distortion III with no issues at all.
Let us know how you like your RV-7!
