I'm going to a P90 set in my SG; I play through a Fender 5E3 Deluxe. Looking for a raw and raunchy tone, but cleanup by rolling off volume.
The set is hum cancelling in the middle posit, so I'm looking forward to that as well.
Reason I ask is I don't have much experience with the p90 sound.

P90s will sound good through any amp IMO. What's not to like about a big fat single coil? Except of course the noise...

The nature of the 5E3 is to be open and not restrict harmonics even more than the BF amps so that the combination of P-90 and Tweed gets extremely raw and raunchy, at least on mine. I sometimes run a '61 Gibby SG (Les Paul) special w/ P-90s and '58 Deluxe and sometimes it sounds like it's fix'n to explode (or implode, who knows).
If that what your lookin' for you're gonna find it in spades with the combo you mentioned.

I find P90s work best with the tone pot rolled back a third. On a tweed amp, it gives a nice creamy attack and lessen the noise associated with it. That is one tone I can never get with a Strat single coil or humbucker.

I think Neil Young describes the tone as "a jetplane in a thunderstorm." Seems to work ok for him.

I don't doubt that they sound "great" through any amp. I believe we are talking well beyond overdrive to the edges of distortion and beyond. Think of the closing seconds of Neil Young's Cinnamon Girl. I'm not disputing this is possible with a solid state amp, but as he already owns the 5E3 this is largely academic to the original posters question.
And yet personally I am curious how they might sound as I stopped buying amps in 1966 (except for a largely unused Mesa Boogie Mk IV)so I never owned a SS amp. It would be really cool if you could post a clip just for S&G's.

PoppaDave: One of the best features of P90's is the ability roll off the volume and get a sweet clean tone. Should work on tweed as well as it does on other tube amps.
I'd also suggest some type of treble bleed mod that will allow you to keep the tone stable when rolling back the volume. Otherwise you will lose some of the treble and it will become muffled.

I can vouch for the wonderful tone and versatiliy of a set of P90's. I have two SG's with P90's, one with 2xP90'S and one with one humbucker sized P90 at the bridge, also had a strat with 2x HB sized P90's.. Outstanding tone and performance for both recording and gigging; I find they do just about anything and rather than being 'jack of all trades' they are IMO 'master of them all'
I think youre in for a treat !

There is no finer setup for jump blues.
Here's an Epi ES295 (GFS P90's) through a tweed Pro. 1964 Fender Reverb tank also.

P90s and tweed go great together but Cinnamon Girl was recorded direct to the console it's all solid state.

I didn't mean to imply that Niel used that combo in the original recordings. In fact there are many roads to that goal. What I did mean to say is that the combo is certainly more than up to the task of creating the hectic exploding boom of feedback rich with harmonics bursting on the very edge of control.
And it does that very well.
The O P was a question of how "raw and raunchy a tone" that particular combination could produce, not " should I get a tweed Deluxe to get tone 'A'".
I'm sure a solid state solution could be used to produce "tone 'A'". It might have been used in the original recording, but that wasn't what the O.P. was asking, was it? Just given the fact that I already have this combo and want to use it. Where can it take me?
I will add that although I can nail this tone with my '58 deluxe and a 62 LP special (P-90's), 99% of the time I play in the "rolled back" smooth glassy tone region because I'm not Neil Young, nor do I want to be. I am not disappointed with this setup because it is light, relatively rugged and has been paid for since the early 60's. I've had the opportunity of playing a 2006 Gibson VOS 61 LP RI (closest I could find like mine) through my amp and it was also very nice. A real LP (not SG shaped) sounds even better, but now that I'm old "light is good" is my main motto, hence the combo.
I will say that my recently acquired (1 year ago) 60's Tribute has stolen the main guitar status as it is very light, too. I swapped out the P90's for mini-hums on that one, but before I did I tried it through the deluxe and it sounded great. In fact it sounds great with the mini's, but again that's not what the OP was asking, LOL.
The tweed circuits for the champ and deluxe, at the very least, were very open and raw due to the minimal output stage design. Other smaller amps of the era are the same. Cheaper amps had that really cool open sound when pushed.
I had this "Electrolab" before I saved up for the deluxe. It eventually cooked, but gosh did it sounded great on the edge of destruction. All those amps did. New ones of that type of design do. It was "nasty" electronics, but great rock tone.
But I digress...

Yeah, bro.
P-90's can get really nasty and raw (good) through any amp but clean up nicely when rolled back. Cheap design amps (like the tweed deluxe) bring that quality out early and well, but still clean up beautifully when rolled back.

Yes. When I play my SG Classic and LP 50's Tribute using my ValveTrain 205 (Tweed Champ clone) I can get that classic gritty, raw P-90 tone and it cleans up nicely when I roll the volume back some and play with the tone control.
I think you'll be very pleased at the way P-90s interact with the tweed sound.

If I remeber correctly, Susan Tedeschi on the Crossroads guitar fest EC's fundraiser got this tone with an old Super Reverb and her D'Armond guitar. Very nice in your face gristle.

On the slightly tamer side of "a jet plane in a thunderstorm", some of those old Grant Green recordings were his P90-loaded ES330 through tweed amps.
Those are some of the best jazz guitar tones I've ever heard.
