Hi
just took delivery of a 1963 cream 2x12" bassman cab. At the moment they're loaded with mismatched EV's although I'm not sure what. I'm yet to use it in anger with my 65 Bandmaster head.
What speakers were originally in there? And - for bass work - were they any good?

Oxford 12T6, Jensen C12N, Oxford 12M6, or Utah12 ceramic.
They seemed to do the trick back in the day.

I've still got the Oxfords from the '62 I sold many, many years ago. Still got some of that 'magic.'

Although I appreciate your desire to restore a choice amp like a 6G6-A Bassman, I wouldn't be so quick to get rid of a pair of mis matched EV 12s . Although not original to the amp some E Vs can be GREAT speakers in guitar amps IMHO. Depending on the particular E Vs you have , mis matched speakers can some times compliment each other adding a slight"Chorus" like effect: I'm guessing this amp will be seeing more use as a guitar amp than a bass amp. Even if you get a date correct pair of Oxfords, Utahs, Jensens or CTS keep those EVs and give them a spin. You might prefer them. Good luck

@John
that's a good point. I was originally asking as a historical reference. I'm a bass player who used to own a Bassman 100 and those useless 4-baffled 4x12" boxes) and as far as design effectiveness.
In this case, it'll be used with the Bandmaster head to play chiming 12 string through. I have yet to use it much but at the moment it seems a touch dull. I doubt I'll be able to use it for the other instrument I use a lot of: a Bass VI. The two sealed chambers give a chance for the speaker to be compression loaded (so, while the bottom end should - in theory - be lacking without porting), it'll help the speaker from over-excursion. I'll have to see about Bass VI suitability.
But I agree: EV speakers are quite nice and the "chorus" effect (ie: phase cancellations between the two different speaker responses) is very real, aided by the fact they are in separate sealed chambers.

that early there would be either the jensens or the oxfords as aformentioned above. I like the oxfords in mine. I've never seen 12M6's in a bassman cab, they are for pro reverbs. They are only rated @ 25 watts. The bay has a pair being sold separately just punch bassman in and you'll find them.

Hmm, IIRC 12M6's are what I found in my blonde bassman cab.

I've never seen it, but I suspect D 120s may have been an option.
I'm pretty sure it'd be nice. :D
