What is a 'Wah-Pad'?

This is a cracking little device that sits under your wah pedal and does two things:

- Turns any wah into a true-bypass pedal by putting it in a true bypass loop of its own

- Turns any wah into an auto-switchin wah that comes on when you put your foot on it and turns off when you remove it. An LED on the top of the unit comes on when the wah is active.

Installation

It took me about 5 minutes to add it to my pedal board with the included hook and loop stuff. Put the wah on the pad, plug the pad's cables into the input and output of the wah. Connect the pad's power cable to the wah, and then plug the input, output and power cables that you would have plugged into the wah itself into the wah-pad.

It also comes with a clever little washer that fits the switch on your wah. You turn the wah on during installation, then slide the washer over the switch to stop the wah being turned off from the wah's own switch.

Build

This is made by G Lab in Poland. It's built like a tank, with high quality metal construction. The only small annoyance is that they've skimped on the input and output jacks, which are plastic types. I hope these hold up, as the wah is first in my effects chain, so the cable from my guitar gets plugged and unplugged every time I setup.

In Use

This does exactly what it says on the tin. Switching is instantaneous. No having a couple of goes to get the wah on or off during a solo. You can use the wah for just one short phrase of a solo, or one chord stab of a rhythm part, making the wah more useful and easy to use. Switching is silent, with no pops or clicks.

The only down side is that you can't leave the wah in a cocked position, as it will turn off when you take your foot off. The flip side to this though is that you can start with the wah in any position, rather than it always being toe-down when you turn it on.

I haven't tried it yet, but there are also other potential uses. Any pedal can be wired up to the pad in principle, so it could be used for effects where a momentary switch would be useful. The switching is fast enough to do stutter-type effects.

Conclusion

On the one hand, this may be designed to solve a problem that doesn't actually exist for you. If however you want a classic wah and don't want to mod it for true bypass, or want it to have modern pressure auto-switching this is great. You could by a modern wah like a Morley or Ibanez of course, but I prefer classic sounds. I for one have occasionally thought about hitting the wah during a solo for a bar or two, but not done it due to the cumbersome switching. I've also fumbled around trying to get a wah to turn off at the right point live.

Hopefully it will be durable (I'll report back if not), but this definitely goes into the "why has no one thought of this before" category for me, and I'm very happy with the 98 Euros i spent on it.
