well this is an article that denounces the dubious way Fender manufacturers used to build guitars in the nineties. Although the man tries to sell his own stuff and by the way tries to discredit the brand, I own a sunburst strat from these years and confirm that there is indeed an alder veneer on top of the two sides, which hides an unknown wood under it...
Well what do you think about it?

Ed Roman is basically full of crap on this page; the only thing that is remotely correct is yes, Fender did make bodies out of poplar and put alder veneers on the front and back for a while in the early-mid 1990s. The poplar bodies were gone by circa 1996-ish; I can't recall seeing that style on a 1997 or 1998. He is also correct about the swimming pool route, but to me that's a non-issue as a good-sounding Strat is a good-sounding Strat regardless of the routing. Hey - Don Grosh prefers the swimming pool routing on his guitars.
He calls a lot of builders "assemblers" which is also crap - John Suhr, Tom Anderson, Gerard Melancon, Don Grosh, and James Tyler build from the ground up - raw wood comes in, is milled into the guitar parts, is finished, and most parts are made in-house (Melancon does have DiMarzio do his pickups but Suhr, Anderson, Grosh and Tyler all do their own pickups in-house). I belive Sadowsky has to send his parts out for finishing due to the epa regulations in New York City where he is located. Pensa does in fact use parts milled from other sources, but it's not like they buy "off the rack" from Warmoth; Warmoth makes the parts to their specs.

"Ed Roman is basically full of crap on this page;"
So true. I remember posts regarding him & tghe way he bad mothed companies, etc. What a SCHMUCK.
My Strat is a '95 w/ the anniversary gold emblem on back of headstock. It is carved out inside which I didn't think I new until I changed pups to TS. It looks kinda funky to me & of course not correct w/ 3 routes. Oh, I didn't hear about the veneer crap until later on after I bought this Am Std. I also have another Strat w/ Ash & opaque white finish, no veneer. On the other hand, it can make it very easy to have a pickguard w/ different array of pups & if you have a few, change the guard w/ the new configuration.
As long as it sounds good in your ears, it don't matter if it has a swimming pool & veneer body.
Peace,
Jake

I prefer the swimming pool route as it is easier to get whatever pups to fit.
