FDP Forum / I'd Hit It! - Drums and Percussion / Yamaha Gigmaker or?

Greetings! Last year about this time I posted about getting an 11 yo his first set (see link). I bought him an electronic set, and I'm happy to say he's kept at it and from what I can tell doing well. The other night we played, me on guitar, him on his set, (with some help from the iPod) Stairway to Heaven, Owner of a Lonely Heart, and Rock you Like a Hurricane and to me he sounded right with it. Point being I think he's going to stick with it. So he is pushing hard for an acoustic set. I've looked at used locally, and it's been a mixed bag. I think I'd rather go new. I've found a local store that has a Yamaha Gigmaker set with hardware that they'll "let go" for $599, which is right in line with the .coms, so the price seems ok.

I'm not a drummer, so I don't know diddly, I do know it looked better than some other sets there, and not as nice as others (the price was reflective of that in all cases). Is that a decent set? How does the Gigmaker compare to similarily priced Ludwigs (they had one for about $100 more), Mapex, or Tama?

From my personal experience, you can't go wrong with anything that says "Yamaha" on it. I have a Steve Gadd Recording Series kit, a Stage Custom kit and a Hip Gig kit by Yamaha. I couldn't think of a better brand to start with. Or end with for that matter.

Thanks Earthchild! Right now though I'm leaning toward a Tama Royalstar set. Nearly the same price, but when I did a side by side the Tama looked a little better put together. If there is something I should know though, I'm still all ears! Also, should I have any concerns that this is basically a "sam ash" special kit and not available anywhere else? Couldn't think of any but...

I did have to chuckle to myself that I was comparing a Yamaha to a 'Tama' Royalstar... Weird... ;)

Yamaha or Tama... either would be fine.

I do like the 10, 12, 16 tom sizes of the Tama kit... I have those sizes on my main kit and they are perfect.
