I was invited by a friend of my lady's to sit in with his band "58/50" on Friday night. It was at a little Honolulu downtown place called the Ground Floor.

Anyway, she had to MAKE me go, hermit that I have become. Everybody there was Kam school alumni and lots of stellar players and singers.

I didn't even take a guitar, thinking that presumtious. The first thing said was "where's your guitar"? Obviously I played what was there, a PRS SE Single cut through a Marshall combo.

I, without knowing or telling, found my boss and his wife there having drinks.. I was a bit stunned. They know I play, but have only done Christmas and fool around stuff in the office and on an astronomy party once that I organized.

Anyway, I get called up to do some blues..;-/ I play about four or five old tunes, "She's tough", "24 hours",Take out some Insurance" all goes very well and I get a bunch of "hana ho's" which is Hawaiian for more..

These guys were all great players and they still didn't have a set list.. just fooling around with sit ins and packing the little joint..

Anyway, I asked them all if they possibly knew the old The Call song, "I still Believe", and they launched into it without missing a lick.

What a great,"planets align" and nobody misses a beat moment. I dusted off my rusted brain and remembered about 80 percent of the lyrics and we had em floored... It felt great to get out, it felt better to nail, and afterwards, I got drinks all night afterward from two couples, one living here, one visiting them, all from Chicago.. they said they had never heard the blues in Hawaii like that...;-)

My boss said to me "I knew you could play..but"...;-)All in all a great night for a hermit guitar player...

Sometimes things just work out right.

I had a moment several weeks ago with my boss who is also a bandmate in a 19 piece swing band. My job is 90% playing Freddy Green style guitar with occasional fills and maybe a solo once or twice a year.

He was aware that I played a weekly unstructured one hour blues/jazz gospel set at the hospital we staff. It was approved with the proviso that patient needs had precedence. Outside the tightly controlled band situation he had never heard me play and I don't do vocals with the swing band. He was rounding when we started playing and stayed the entire set--something unusual for such a busy doctor/administrator.

Afterwards he came up to me and said "I never knew you could play like that--and your singing is great".

I had some friends over for a jam Sunday and go figure, I forgot to order pizza so the drummer was a no show. After a couple hours, the bass player sits down and grabs the sticks. Then he straps on the Britney mic and does some vocals while keeping a solid beat. I was blown away.
