I'm "Branded"-- my stars are ripped away

On July 4th (that seems like a long time ago), a thread came up over at jpfolks.com about "What makes a hit song?" Someone said it "It's not chemistry so much as it's alchemy" -- hey, I said, that's my first song for 50/90. It has taken awhile to get here. I wrote the lyrics right away and then added music in the evening. But it needed something. My nephew came over and added that cool signature riff, the bridge and was singing it (he is a way better singer than me!). Of course, he is a 20 year old -- so he went AWOL for awhile (ha, ha) and here I am stuck doing it. It needs some more work, of course.

Alchemy
(c) Emmrich/Everett

It's not chemistry, it's alchemy
It's the way you move, it makes me lose
all my mind

you're fire and air in this affair
I'm earth and water makes you stronger
We’re intertwined

Just think about the last time you smiled
wasn't it with me by your side
I don't know why you fight it
when you see me you are so excited

it's elemental not judgmental
it's constructive not destructive
it's needing you not misleading you
all the time

(bridge)
Everytime we get together
Our earthly spirits turn to gold

It's not chemistry, it's alchemy
It's the way you move, it makes me lose
All my mind

you're fire and air in this affair
I'm earth and water, I make you stronger
may take some time
yea, yea yea

I like your song, Kevin, it's smooth and meaningful, channeling a bit of Dylan or Neil Young. And by the way, I really admire your dedication to songwriting over the years. You inspire me.

One suggestion occurred to me. The line "it's constructive not destructive" seems a bit basic in that the opposing words are so similar. You could consider putting them in different lines, like so:

"it's elemental and constructive
not judgmental or destructive"

just a thought. Song is good as is.

Cheers,
Andrew

Like tiller2 I think the song is "smooth and meaningful" and I like his line change suggestion.

I am one of those who believe songs become hits because of the music, melody line or ear worm.

To me the song has no hook and nothing catchy which draws me back or makes me want to hear it again.

Hey guys. I came over here and was amazed that "tin pan alley" was so high up on the recent list (ha, ha).

tiller2: Interesting idea. I am never beyond changing things if they can be better (or just changing for changing sake!). Thanks for the listen and comment.

Alderandash: "To me the song has no hook and nothing catchy which draws me back or makes me want to hear it again."

Dawg! That's not good (ha, ha). I was hoping the riff would help. Thanks for stopping by and giving it a spin. just because you don't care for it doesn't mean I don't appreciate the time that you took to give it a listen.

By the way, 50/90 is now in full swing. If you are a songwriter you owe it to yourself to check it out.

50/90 site: Jult 4th to Oct 1st -- 50 songs!!!
