Well, I've also got an early-mid 80's Tube Screamer (no mods). The DLS covers a lot of that tone and much more. DLS also has a lot better dynamic response--very much like an actual amp. For the money I think the Catalinbread pedals are some of the best out there .
Hope you find something you like.

For distortion (ie metal/hard rock tone) , you can't go wrong with these classics;
RAT2 as already mentionned
Boss DS1
BOSS SD1
MXR Distortion+
For modern tone, MXR Distortion III
The key to getting a good distortion tone is also in the EQ pedal that you put in front or after it, check the MXR 6 or 10 band EQ. For 100 to 120 bucks new, you can get both dist + EQ and will never look back.

+1 on the sd-1. I also use a blues driver. Tried a bunch of boutique stuff and all kinds of others, then came back to these two Boss pedals. Go figure.

Two things...
1) I found that using 12AY7s (EH) in V1 can really make dirt pedals sound a lot better.
2) Also stacking your dirt pedal into a Timmy pedal (light overdrive pedal by custom pedal builder Paul Cochrane) is a real plus. It can EQ, boost and add dirt. The Timmy can really help EQ/shape your upstream dirt pedal like an extra set of tone knobs on the amp.

I use a Danelectro CO-1 Drive with my Tele and a clean amp. It works well but is an overdriven not highly distorted sound. I also use the Danelectro Transparent Overdrive CTO-1 and combine them at times.
Good pedals.

Boss SD1
Tone at about 10-11 o'clock.
Can't beat that.
Unless you want more extreme.
For that I use a Keeley DS1 or a Big Muff.

Gonna get lotso laughs with this one but I swear it's true.
For crunchy JCM800 with an edge distortion, the OD side of the Marshall Jackhammer just.cannot.be.beat. The actual 'Distortion' side is totally unusable (by anybody, I hear and I believe it). But I've been trying to kick that Jackhammer off my board for *years*, it never ever leaves. Has a great tweakable EQ, a great range of dirt (from 'just a bit' to 'wayyyy too much'), stacks well with virtually everything, is in a bulletproof metal housing...and they're relatively cheap.
It's not everybody's thing, I get that, nor for every application. But for that 1 thing, I haven't found better. I know a lotta people hate it...but it's sounded good with every amp I've owned, and thatsa lotta ampsa.
Oh, and my #1 is a '62 AV RI. #2 is a CV Squier Custom that I put a 'bucker in the bridge (yes, bridge. Yes, full sized.) position.

A Rat is a good pedal, because it has all the gain/drive you need, even with low output pickups.

I am totally in love with Analogman's King of Tone. I play a stock 78 Tele through a Marshall SLP 100. It gives me the ability to play through the Marshall at lower amp volume for smaller rooms. But for larger rooms, I plug streight in.

I sold my King of Tone because it didn't have enough "grit" and the boost on it was not loud enough. I bought Gristle King which solved both of those concerns.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is this DLS you speak of?
Dano Transparent Overdrive V2 works well. See Germandude's demo.

Keeley modded Boss SD-1. My friend's Fulltone OD and Plimsoul pedals sound rather nice as well.

DLS = Catalinbread "Dirty Little Secret" which is one of the better Marshall-in-a-box type pedals out there.

What tones are you looking for? Examples (eg. "Crazy Train" or "Tax Man")
I've got both an MI Audio Crunch Box and a ZVEX Box of Rock. I love 'em both, but much prefer the BoR. They both turn my TRRI into a cranked Marshal Plexi at will, but the BoR can better replicate a cranked AC30, which is awewome.
I think the BoR is better at adding color with a very slight distortion than does the Crunch Box.

For distortion w/single coil tele tone (PV Reactor w/Fender P'ups) I resort, please don't laugh, to either the Marshall ShredMaster or the DriveMaster. Usually I will stack either in front of the CMatMods Signa Drive....gets me there. It tends to not matter which amp I use - the SFDR (6V6), PVC30 (EL84) or the PignoseG60VR (6L6/5881)- I get to where I need to be. These pedals are largely overlooked here and the DriveMaster can be typically had off the 'bay for about a 1/3 of the Shredder.
Just my $.02 worth....
