This has probably been asked, but couldn't find it.

I am watching Elvis Costello and the Imposters live in Memphis on Palladia, and he has a 4 string Gretsch that I have no clue what it is.

At first, I thought it was a bass, but it wasn't.

Any help?

Probably a tenor guitar, like

this. These were popular in the 30s and 40s.

Thank you sir.

The strangeness of it caught my eye, and it had a great sound.
