I've noticed in the gazillion songs I've written, very few of them contain a bridge or a middle 8. How essential of a component is the bridge/m8? Thoughts/Opinions?

Bridges are the bane of my existence. I know many of my songs need them, but everytime I try to do one, it sounds so contrived and seems to add nothing to my songs.
Sometimes I have this same trouble with my choruses. I'll come up with a killer riff, and I just seem to kill the vibe of it when trying to create a chorus. As a result, I've recorded dozens of riffs, but lose my muse when I try to add a chorus. I need a collaborator!

Many songs these days are loop-based musically, and just have various vocals over the top of the looped background. Personally, I find it annoying and lazy.

my songs generally only contain bridges if it presents itself during the creation process...if not...then no. Then again, some of my tunes are structured weirdly anyway...but who cares..it is what it is.

"Ana Ng" by They Might Be Giants features the following lyrics:
"As I was driving once / I saw this painted on a bridge:
'I don't want the world / I just want your half'"
It was a more than a full decade after I'd first heard the song, after dozens and dozens of listenings that I realized that those lyrics WERE the bridge.

Mine are not entirely without bridges, but about 90%...Here are 4 ---Gasp has an extended Intro, no bridge...Colors - there is no real Chorus, middle section serves as bridge...No bridge in the other two at all...I don't worry about it.

For me the bridge is the statement. The message you are trying to get across.
Poems are a series of verses.
Each verse in the song gives an example or explains the "statement"
Even a folk song like blowing in the wind, which you could argue is a just a series of verses,
returns to "the answer my friend......" which is the statement and could be viewed as the bridge.
Dunno, but to me, no bridge - no message.
We all see things differently I guess.
