I'm creating a backing track for a song a student of mine have written. Midi-editing is new to me, with this song being my first attempt at doing a full band. I would appreciate your input on this. What can I do to make it better? What already works? EQ, panning, instrument choice, etc. Since I'm posting in drums and percussion, I'd especially like feedback on how to make the drum part work better. I know it doesn't sound very good, but unsure on how to improve it.
After the minute or so that I've made, there's also a crappy acoustic version of the song we threw together a few weeks back. Do you think this backing will work with the song?

Being a drummer, I'm not a big drum machine guy... but that seems to suit the song. The little bit of hihat to start the drums is good.
