Just picked up a 94' Guild D-55. Sounds great, but it's going to need a new set of strings. What are you D-55 owners using?

I've got a Guild F47RC. Not a dread, but an orchestra body. However, I did a round-robin of strings a few years ago to find the ones I liked best--playability, good sound, etc. DRs, D'Addarios, John Pearse, and several other brands. I ultimately chose the John Pearse phosphor bronze. Good quality, seem to last for a good while and they are affordable (juststrings.com).

I know these things are very subjective, but that's what worked for me after months of experimentation.

I use Light gauge D'Addario Phosphor Bronze strings on my '06 D-55. It's my main solo gigging axe (I had a Fishman Matrix pup installed right after I bought it) since I bought it new 5 yrs ago.

GREAT guitar!

Bill, how would you rate the Fishman vs. the D-TAR?

I have an old D40. I also like the John Pearse phosphor bronze.

Forgot to chime in. The John Pearse Phosphor Bronze are excellent on the D-40 for me, but sometimes I do the D'Addario and they are 'okay'.

I don't like the JP's. The tone is basic phosphor-bronze, but I find that the plain strings rust up in no time, Like Ernie Ball Slinky's.

I really like La Bella "Golden Alloy" on my D-35 (mahogany/spruce) along with Martin Marquis 80/20 for more projection

"...I find that the plain strings rust up in no time..."

Seeing as I never play my Guild in the shower, I've never had this problem. YMMV...

Fritz: Can't answer that as I've never tried a D-Tar equipped guitar.

My fav acoustic pup these days is the Highlander iP-2. They weren't around when I bought my D-55 in '06, so I went with the best thing at the time (Fishman Matrix).

I use Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze light (12's) on my '75 D55 and I love the timbre and the long life. My perspiration is brutal on uncoated strings so I pay the extra and I don't have to change them as often. Your mileage may vary.

Update: My 2006 D-55NT (and all of my other acoustic guitars) has been changed out to the K&K Pure Mini pickup. Best pup I've heard so far!
