Marshall Grant is playing a very odd looking bass on this show - anyone know what it was?

Good view at about 1.50

Looks like an Epiphone Newport (note the "batwing" headstock). That was Epi's corresponding model to the Gibson EB-0. The longer scale Embassy was their version of the non-reverse Thunderbird.

I'd always wondered about that, especially as the headstock is so visible on the "San Quentin" album cover. Thanks for solving that little mystery!

Marshall Grant had a custom black Epiphone Newport. The batwing headstock is unmistakable.

So that explains it!! Next question - have any of you played one? I'm curious about it now!

I have played a few of them over the years. They play like an EB-0, and are simillar in bulk and weight. The necks are simillar although overall there is a different feel. Very light, easy to get around and resonant. The 30" scale is part of the charm, although it will not seem very much like a Mustang or Musicmaster. The sound will be in line with an old EB-0. They share parts and scale with the old Kalamazoo basses, but they don't feel or play the same. If you are a Fender fan, or only familliar with Fenders and the many basses that ape them, then an Epi Newport will be very peculiar to pick up. They take some getting used to in feel, response, tone, and mudbucker-ish-ness. Of course, it worked pretty well back then, as the record shows.

Guess I should post the Epi freak flag. I'm a big fan of the old Epiphones. I've had a couple of Newports, and had an Embassy for about 20 years. For the money, they have the exact same electronics as the Gibson counterparts. The Newport has a beefier neck than the Gibson EB-0, though.

I actually got turned on to Epiphones when I was looking for a vintage Thunderbird. I learned a lot about them from the guy who sold it to me. While the Epiphones are getting up there in price, you can get them for a good 25-30% cheaper than a comparable Gibson. In fact, if you find a good Embassy, it can be up to half the price of a vintage Thunderbird, and they're balanced a little better.
