What's playable at a low $ entry point? I saw a Johnson that looked OK, are they the same as Cort?

I'm sure there are cheap fretless acoustics out there. As for a GOOD cheap acoustic fretless, maybe not so much.

Oh, don't mind me. I don't really like very many fretted acoustic or acoustic/electric basses, much less fretless. I'm sure there are some good ones, but they just don't do it for me. I did like a fretted Ovation I played once, but it wasn't cheap, over $1K used. Most just don't seem to have much punch unless plugged in. And the bodies are huge. If you're looking for a URB vibe, I'd lean more toward a hollow bodied electric, fretted or fretless with flats. But that's just me. Best of luck.

Dean makes one for about $200.
You can get one from Amazon.
I think it ships without the shrink wrap.

"Most just don't seem to have much punch unless plugged in."
That the point, they have to be plugged in. An acoustic bass guitar just isn't going to produce that much volume. It might get you through practice in an 'acoustic' setting, but in a live environment it's going to be plugged in.

It's not fretless, but my Ibanez acoustic bass really developed a new voice when changing to LaBella nylons. It can approximate some standup sounds.

Saw a friend play a Dean lined fretless the other night and it sounded good. Really nice big body and thick soundboard. I suspect it would have some good unplugged volume too.

Michael Kelley makes a good one.
I had a fretless MK fiver for awhile. Only got rid of it because I decided I wasn't a fretless player.

Thanks Daniel. Ordered one today, and a set of Fender tapewound flats to go with it.
MF has 'em for 199 shipped with a free gig bag, couldn't resist.
