I cannot lower the neck pickup on my '91 MIM Tele to the height recommended by Fender; the adjustment screws just rise up above the pickguard level. The pups are Texas Specials and Fender recommends a starting height of 8/64" (from pole top to string when depressed at the last fret, bass side) and 6/64" (treble side).
I had the pups professionally installed, but did not think I needed a complete setup. But he seems to have set the pup heights too high for TS pups.
I've never opened up this guitar. Do you think something under the pickguard might be obstructing the adjustment of the pups? Do the Fender recommended heights seem about right?

I read that I need to remove the pickguard to adjust the neck pup. Will try later today.

Relaunching this thread....
Could someone describe how to adjust the neck pickup height for a 91 MIM Tele that has the pickup attached to the pickguard, with a rubber tube on each of the two screws that go through the pg and into the pickup?
I'm trying to lower the pickups, but I'm not sure what is the role of the rubber tubes.
Thank you!

The tubes compress when you raise the pickup to keep it still and stable. Otherwise the screws might just fall through the holes when holding the guitar at certain angles, and the height would change and the pickup might even touch the strings.

So should the top end of the tubes be flush with the underside of the pickguard (no matter how low the pups are set)?
Or should the bottom end of the tubes be flush with the screw hole on the pickup (in which case the tubes would compress if you raised the pickup)?
Thanks

I would set them so the tubing is against the gaurd, preventing the screws from moving up or down. Although, the tubing should touch the pickup and pickguard to keep it stable. It sounds like your tubing is too short for the low height you want. I have some tubing I can give you free for it. You can cut it with scissors to the length you want. Thanks for the kind offer Achase. I've discovered that one of the screws is slightly bent, so it might be the root of the problem. I'll suss that out, before troubling you to send me some tubing.

Actually, the screw was not bent, but there was some metal flash under the screw cap that interfered with its function. I filed that off and now it turns easily in the pickguard hole and I was able to adjust the pickup properly...
