2000 Custom Shop Telecaster: The "Custom Classic Telecaster"

paid $1400, list price $2200

Cobalt Blue Transparent Color, Ash Body, Highly figured Maple neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, 2 Texas Tele Single Coil PUP's, Medium-Jumbo Frets

appearance: a truely beautiful guitar, the workmanship is fantastic, the Custom Shop is turning out some un-real quality stuff these days

playability: like butter, hot butter shimmering....easy to play, great even-ness throughout the neck.....balanced....the set-up on this was perfect from minute one, and the Guitar is a dream to play

tone: fantastic, the bridge pickup is just plain sick, outrageously good. A full, thick tone, just the right balance of treble and bass and just the right amount of killer tone. Its all right there, the killer Tele tone as well as the much sought after SRV/Hendrix type of scream (yes, thats right, with a Tele!).....the bridge PUP is sweet smooth blues. Put this thing through a TS-9 Tubescreamer and a wah pedal and a tube amp and U have my often dreamed of never before found ideal tone----sustain for days and just a great classic blues rock funkiness sound

value: I think at $1400 this guitar is a tremendous value considering the high quality craftmanship of the Custom Shop, the complete eye to detail obviously given, and overall the fact that this guitar is my new #1 and a dream guitar.......

overall: truely a killer guitar.......surprised more people don't have this particular type of guitar...I know Strats are more popular than Tele's, but this guitar is one incredible instrument. Considering the price and the great quality that the Fender Custom Shop is turning out these days, I highly recommend this guitar

overall grade: a 12 on a scale of 1-10

Psych: Congrats:

One question - What is the neck shape on your tele?

the neck is a U shape or a soft V I would call it, though I don't know what the "official" word on neck shape would be........its not a super thin neck OR a super big neck, just right for my hands

I find this guitar easier to play than any I have played before, with that great CLASSIC TELE TONE

upon furthur review and more playing I would second guess that and say the neck is more of a "C" shape or a soft "V"....either way the neck is one of the most appealing aspects of this guitar, as the playability and easy smooth playing is one of the most appealing aspects of this Tele........I believe the nitro finished Ash body combined with Texas Tele pickups makes for some great tone, but great electronics and wood can only go so far without a fantastic neck and this one has certainly got that

I will post some pictures here in the next few days

unfortunately I am having trouble getting the pictures together

after playing my guitar more and more I really continue to be impressed..... the bridge pickup on this guitar sounds so close to my "ideal" tone of having that scream with an attitude type of sound without being thin at all

in my original post I meant to say that its the neck pickup that is "sweet smooth blues"

the back of the neck is highly figured Birdseye Maple

I got a 2000 version but I see that Fender hasn't raised the price on these guitars for 2001

I highly recommend them, I think they are truely one of the best values in the entire Fender line. I understand with the Texas Special Tele pickups and the Birdseye maple neck that this guitar is not a "Vintage style Telecaster" to the purests eyes in terms of being a "Vintage Fender Telecaster", still I say its an incredible instrument with fantastic craftsmanship

A.J., good review. I'm typing here licking my chops thinking that your CS axe was a better value than my '52 RI that I paid a grand for.

Congrats.

I have both of these guitars, and they're different animals. I have em for around a year now & I love em both. The CS piece I got in a blow-out at the Evil GC for around 1200 and the '52 RI was a whopping good deal @ 899.Don't worry, be happy...:-))

found out more specific information about my Custom Classic Telecaster after calling Fender Consumer Relations:

the neck is a "C" neck with a 9.5 inch radius

the bridge is especially made for this guitar: its a chrome plated steel bridge with solid brass saddles

Hey Psychedelic A.J. - how is the finish? Im planning on getting a Custom Classic Strat in the transparent cobalt blue since im so hooked on the transparent finishes in the ASe's and AD's (natural and teal green).

the finish is fantastic, nice and thin and evenly put on, flawless really....and it looks like the finish will be even better on the 2001 models too...i may be mistaken, but from what i understand the 2000 custom classic guitars had a thin poly undercoat and a nitro finish, whereas now in 2001 they will be all nitro.....Mike Eldred posted some pictures of some of the 2001 Custom Shop guitars in the Custom Shop forum and wow that Bing Cherry transparent looks nice on the Custom Classic's....of course I am partial to the Cobalt Blue transparent myself...:)

Psychedelic : any word about when your 2001 Custom Classic will arrive? I ordered one in Cobalt Blue with rosewood a week ago today from Guitar Stop. When I first saw that color, I had to have one and so I chose it as my user name. It was all of your good reviews on the 2000 model that helped me make my final decision. Also, do you know what type of case comes with these guitars?.....thanks

cobalt-tele: my 2001 Custom Classic is due to arrive sometime around March 1st, I ordered it from GUitar Stop and I ordered a Sunburst one with a rosewood fingerboard. I've always like Sunburst guitars and I figured I already had a Cobalt Blue transparent so I wnet with the Sunburst. The case is a G&G Case, the kind that comes with a lot of the Custom Shop guitars, very nice case with plush interior.

Jeanne from Guitar Stop can let you know an estimation as to about when your guitar will be ready. From what I nderstand every order varies in terms of maunfacturing time (depends on how busy the Custom Shop is, whether they are back-ordered, etc)

cobalt-tele: (great name by the way!) another bit of information we found out about in the Custom Shop forum is that the 2001 Custom Classic Tele's will also have an upgrade in the neck pickup: apparently Fender is introducing a new neck pickup for these guitars called a "Twisted Tele" neck pickup which is an improvement over the neck pickup on the 2000 Custom Classic Tele: apparently this one has even better tone and better balance with the bridge pickup (which will still be the Texas Special Tele pickup that I love...what a killer bridge pickup this is!)...I am looking forward to hearing what the "improved" neck pickup sounds like cuz the Texas Special neck pickup in the 2000 model already sounds fantastic

its great to see the Fender Custom Shop making this kind of committment to these guitars, upgrading them while keeping the same price...as I have posted before I think these are the best deals on guitars in the universe...of course I am slightly biased about my #1 :)

just found out----the bridge pickup in the 2001 model is different also, just found this out in Frontline...the bridge pickup will be a new Vintage pickup. I will check out how it sounds but will probably change it out for a Texas Special Tele pickup

as time goes by I continue to be thrilled with my Telecaster...the more I play it the better it seems to get....its just starting to get broken in a little and the tones seems to be getting better and better...for me a 9.5 inch radius and medium jumbo frets just means ease in bending strings and the balance and even-ness of the neck continues to amaze me

still don't have pictures of it yet but I DO have some mp3's that I recorded with it in case anyone wants to hear how it sounds

well now that I have the 2001 Custom Classic Tele in hand I can tell you that the pickups in that guitar are truely fantastic...the neck and bridge pickups are well balanced and give a wide range of tones depending on which selector position you choose...the neck pickup is very Strat-like, very bassy and sounds best with the treble all the way up on the tone control

I had thought I was going to change out the pickups but these are keepers.....can't say I like them better than the Texas Specials in the 2000 Custom Classic but these sound great and the two slightly different guitars will compliment each other well

other differences between the two models I can tell: the headstock on the 2001 is bigger slightly and has a somwhat different logo on it...the 2001 is lightly figured (mine has no birdseye at all) whereas the 2000 was more figured (my 2000 has a lot of birdseye in the neck)...the 2001 has a slightly different bridge, seems more solid...also the 2001 has a smoother flowing pickup selection switch...the 2001 is all nitro, the 2000 is nitro over a poly base

I think I just lucked out and got a superb 2000 Custom Classic...the 2001 is an improvement design wise over the 2000

the 2000 will remain my #1 but the 2001 will get plenty of use

I should point out that my 2001 Custom Classic came in on time (actually maybe a week or so early) it just took me an extra while to pay off the balance

many thanks to Guitar Stop for their tremendous service and patience
