so i bought a electromatic baritone new off of ebay great price. total newbie to baritones. the guy had it set up A to A not the factory E to E. the strings were loose due to shipping i tuned it up A to A and it didn't sound real good wouldn't stay in tune so i tried to tune it up to the E to E and ended up popping a string.

what do i need to do to get this thing sounding good. if i want it to be standard tuning a octave lower what strings should i use. if i want to keep it in A tuning what strings should i use.

i want to use for some alt country twang type stuff not heavy metal what tuning should i use for that is the real question.

I used Fender Bass VI strings on mine, keeping it E-E as I used it as a bass as well as a baritone. I toyed with the idea of making up a set that went A D G B E A but gave up on it and settled for the stock tuning.

Also, I eventually replaced the weak bridge pickup with a TV Jones Classic which improved the tone and output enormously. The in-between switch position engaging both pickups was the most flavourless I have heard on any electric stringed instrument, bass or guitar. After I played a Jaguar Baritone Custom I started saving for one and replaced the Gretsch with it. Still E-E but now with single coil clarity and much more tone variety. Chucked a Bigbsy on mine which perfected it.

All that said, I hope you dig the Gretsch as it probably can turn into a fine weapon.
