I was just curious...

Does anyone know the difference between an Oxford 12K5-3 and the 12K5-6?

Thanks

I am very interested in this topic. I have examined this topic before. However, I couldn't get nothing.
I have never heard 12k5-3.I have seen 12k5-12 in DRIP EDGE DR before. It was not 12ohm but 8ohm.I don't know what is different from 12k5-6 and 12k5-12.There are a lot of mysteries in those speakers.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe the number after the 12K5- is the cone type.

Well, I know Fender put the 12k5-3 in the 61-63 Brown Deluxe (20w) and the 12k5-6 in the 63-66 Deluxe Black (23w). Both of these would have been 8 ohm speakers.

So, 4 questions/possibilities:

1. Is it possible that the 3 watt difference between these amps necessitated a new speaker?

2. Was it simply time for Oxford to change models?

3. Are they exactly the same, with the only difference being the basket color? (-3 has a gold basket; -6 has a black basket)

4. As slider mentioned, cone type? According to the following links, the cones seem identical, except for the color.

All theories, but someone's got to know the story.

Hey slider313,

Can you post a couple of pics of the front of that 12k5-1?

My'61 12K5-1 has a 10 ribbed inverted seamed cone where my '65 12K5-6 has an 8 ribbed pulp cone with more doping.

I just acquired a vintage 12k5-6 that I put in my brown deluxe (which would've had the gold 12k5-3). As it turns out, some of the black paint has come off and it's indeed gold under! I also compared all the pics I'd collected of the 12k5-3 to mine and they are truly identical. So seems that Fender simply had the same speaker painted black to match the cosmetics of the new Deluxes and changed the number.

The original speaker from my '66 BFDR is a 12K5-6 and as with lookah's its black finish is peeling off, gold underneath.

I bought a brown deluxe with a 12k5 in it. in all honesty its not really worth making a big fuss over. get a vintage c12n for your amp. I did and the jensen blows the oxford out of the water.
