Hello fellow '65 PRRI lovers. I've decided to mod my already awesome amp - hopefully making it awesomer! XD

I've upgraded the tubes to JAN-GE preamp and Gold Lion power tubes. Rebiased the amp to factory spec. The Weber 10A150-O has arrived and is awaiting for the new MojoTone cabinet and TO20 transformer to be delivered.

Should be quite nice...

I just ordered a scratch-n-dent PRRI from MF for my upcoming birthday. It will join my now 15 yr old DRRI and the two 70s Champs.

I'd like mine a lot better if I could get rid of some fuzz between low Ab and B--just those 3 notes. a friend says you can't hear it at gig volumes but it's maddening in the living room at night, so I've taken to doing my noodling on a $50 Peavey Envoy.

rc No one mentions it but the reverb pan can virate against the cabinet, atleast it did on mine. In my case it was the Ab on the low E string. After tracking it down I simply placed a small cloth and wedged it between the reverb tank cover and the back of the bottom panel. The very annoying rattle is completelt gone now.

Try this setting on your PR

Volume- 4
Treble-8
Bass-9
Reverb-2.5

This setting may seem a bit extreme but try this with your single coils plugged straight in. Great tone!

My PRRI remains unmodded and I love it. Its my final keeper amp after a clean sweep of gear. I thought about putting kickback legs on it but opted for a kickback amp stand rather than drilling holes in the cab. You say adding the legs is foolproof?! Ha, this fool can fowl up anything! "No irreversible mods allowed" is my motto. That includes screw holes.

I did indeed buy a footswitch from The Switch Doctor. www.ampfootswitch.com. Why? The Doctor made one for me that has LEDs above the Reverb & Trem buttons. I think it was $60+/-.
Does exactly what I needed.

Note - This footswitch has NOT been subjected to rigorous, demanding service. It looks & feels pretty bulletproof but it has yet to take live rounds.

I'm late a usual, but it's on the way. FRI is supposed to be the big delivery day.

This thread was awesome to read. How does everyone still like their amp after all these years?

I bought the “green” with Celestion 12, and absolutely LOVE IT! 15 watts is plenty, or we mic it. Sounds wonderful, especially with the 12 green.

Well, here I am again, pulling this thread back up, because I just bought my 3rd PRRI today (from MF through our link at the top of the page here, Chris); should be delivered middle of next week with the NY holiday...

...I've regretted letting these go each time, and about a year ago I tried one with Burgundy tolex and a 12" speaker, but it just didn't do anything for me--sent it back.

But got to gassing for one again, and just sold a guitar on Reverb, so... I was looking at a Tweed one at Sweetwater (reduced price "floor model"), but it was a 12 incher again...

...I snoozed so I loozed, then found a standard returned PRRI on MF's sight for only $650! Hopefully it is mint as described and doesn't have any rattling issues (has Fender fixed this?). I don't tend to run mine above 5 much, so the rattle probably won't be an issue.

I'll report back when she arrives...

The amp I got in 2009 has been through a few changes that have stuck since 2012. Last month I pulled the Weber 10F150 and stuck the original Fender speaker back in to see if my ears changed. The Weber sounded less mid-rangey to me with the amp cranked, so back in it went.

My mods:

Maple speaker baffle stiffener
Weber 10F150 speaker
Right-angle IEC 12' power cable
Heyboer TO20 OT
Diode rectification
JJ 6V6 power tubes
Sylvania preamp and reverb tubes
Maple batten added across lower back panel

The thing just keeps on chuggin'. No issues at all. The amount of punch from this little amp is insane, considering it's an open back cab.

Yeah, for such a simple design, Leo got everything about right - the Swiss Army Knife of amps.

@Reverend Mikey - did you ever get your amp from MF? Curious how it sounds- 650 sounds like a really good deal. Been gasing for one pretty bad lately. Coming from a Blues Junior.

So I joined the club about 3 months ago and just today switched out the OT for the TO20 and swapped in JJ 6v6s and a tung sol 12ax7 in V1 and wow!
I had a DRRI before and had been wondering since I got the PRRI if I might like the Deluxe better...? Not now. Everything I thought I was missing I now hear.

Just thought someone who may be in the same boat might want to know that.

Big Joe, why a 12ay7 ?

Never mind, I found your previous post...

Jun 5th, 2010 06:43 PM Edit Profile
I am using JJ6v6s and a EH 12AY7 in V1 for increased headroom. I left all other other tubes that came with my PRRI. My understanding is that power tubes and V1 have the most impact on tone. I also happen to think that the stock Jensen C10R speaker is a good match for the PRRI. I have no flub with this speaker since I upgraded the O/T to a T020.

I changed the speaker to the Celestion Gold 10 for more mids and am quite pleased with the wider spectrum of tone.
