Ok, I can play piano, but I'm a guitarist that wants to start playing piano/organ stuff again. I am looking for an inexpensive keyboard for piano, wurlie, B3 stuff. I can plug the keyboard into my guitar amp for home use (A Hot Rod Dlx). Is the Yamaha KX61 a good start ? Does it have voices stored onboard or do I have to actually link it to a PC and an amp to get voices ? Is there something else in the $200-300 price range for the above referenced sounds ? I know nothing about midi. My last electronic keyboard was a rhodes 73 in the late 70s. Thanks

It appears to me that the Yamaha KX-series controllers do not have voices onboard and were designed to play VST instruments from a computer. A used Yamaha S03 synth is in your price range and a new Yamaha MM6 ($600) if you can save a while longer; both have sounds onboard and can plug directly into an amp.

The KX series keyboards are controllers only. Fine if you have a sound module or soft-synth but they don't have any on board voices. I own an S03 and have very few complaints with it for the price. I use mine as a practice keyboard and as something light to take to open mics and rehearsals away from my house. You might also want to look at the Roland Juno-D, around the same price as the S03, a matter of preference on the sound of the patches. You should be able to get a good used one of either brand on eBay at a very good price.

Thanks guys...I'd love to find a nice used Yamaha CP70 elec. grand...but shipping and maintenance costs would kill any deal.
