I was recording some songs with a friend who writes some pretty good stuff, IMO.
He had this sign up in his studio that I really liked :
"Painters put their work on canvas or paper ;
Songwriters and musicians put their work on silence."

Ha, ha -- 4 months isn't bad for a response here (even if it is from yourself!).

Does anyone here do this when writing a song?:
you come up with the music part, then lets say you add the words and melody. do you write out the notes of the vocal / melody line?
i think this would be pretty cool... but i don't know how to do this.
anyone here doing this?

"do you write out the notes of the vocal / melody line?"
I think if I want to take my writing to the next level then that is exactly what I need to do. Since I am limited, singing-wise, I often just sing the easy way out without really listening. If I mapped out the melody on piano or guitar, I would force myself to write better melodies.
