FDP Forum / Sing, Sing, Sing! - Vocalist's Forum / Foldback

Some singers need good foldback to stay on pitch. Foldback and PA systems can vary, so there is always risk the singer wont get sufficient foldback. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations on in-ear personal monitors / whatever they are called as an alternative? Or is there a better / cheaper solution out there to getting good foldback every time?

I used in-ear for about six months then went back to wedges. As a singer/guitarist in a three-piece I felt cut off from the other guys...and I never got used to hearing the audience through the vocal mic.

However, I know some people who swear by them.

We've just replaced our wedges with Mackie SRM150 powered monitors very clear, loud and light to carry

lunchbox sized monitors

We also use Mackie SRM 150's as personal monitors.

Our singer has hers mounted on the mike stand using the special fitting, one guitarist & the keyboard player mount theirs on mike stands with the booms taken off (& again using the special fitting)

They work fine & are very convenient to use.

BUT (& I've been on this forum before - & to Mackie in the UK - about this) the reliability of these monitors is awful. Of the original 4 purchased, 3 failed within about 7/8 gigs (around 2 months) The 4th one lasted a bit longer but also failed in under 6 months. The first 3 were replaced by the UK supplier, the last 1 I took to my local repair man so that he could become familair with them (in anticipation of further problems) The UK Mackie appointed repair workshop quite happily supplied me with the full manual (in pdf format) by email.
